Quite the contrary.

Forum and Articles --

There was speculation here back before the iPad came out, over whether or not it would allow running multiple iPhone apps at a time.

When it did come out, articles were written about this inability, such as this VentureBeat article listing the lack as a #1 reason not to buy an iPad.

Apps to Pretend --

To get around the lack of multi-window support, some iPad apps were created (as much as Apple would allow) to emulate the ability.

E.g. dual browser window apps, and the Taposé app that tried to be like the Microsoft Courier.

Competition Does It --

Samsung's Note tablet allows having not only overlaid little windows, but some of their apps are made to work side by side. Have you never seen this commercial of what the Note can do with side by side windows?

Or Microsoft's recent ad where Siri says "I'm sorry I can only do one thing at a time":

It's like anything else. You don't have to use it. But sometimes it would be quite handy. Have you never wished you had a calculator onscreen while looking at some figures? Some people don't do a lot with their devices. Some of us do.

You know iPad runs iOS, NOT windows, yeah?

We're talking about multiple app windows on the screen, not MS Windows.

On larger screens, it can be handy.

Ok, listen. If you have EVER used an iOS device you will know that they are touch devices. They are also controlled by sensors. For example- tilting or shaking can invoke an action. Windows does NOT work in this way. Can you see why it would be absolutely crazy for an iPad trying to calculate & interprate what each motion is meant to do.. are you only trying to control one app? The other? Should the sensors be nullified during split screen?
I outlined in a previous post an idea of how it might work- basically if both apps froze in a "screenshot mode" & you could tap to activate between the two. Having both apps simultaneously live & accepting input would be a disaster. Can you imagine? "Whoops, I was shaking to shuffle to next song & accidentally deleted my inbox in my other open window!" Lol...

You've obviously not used a Samsung Note tablet or phone.
They figured out how to do this already.
Just like traditional windowed apps, the one in focus has priority.
The other window will still get data/screen refreshes however in needs to be brought to the active window before it will interact with input.

No. I'm pretty sure the Note does not support full & unlimited multitasking. That's not feasible, for reasons I've already stated. It has a pop-up menu of certain built-in apps that can run in windowed mode (twitter, chrome, gmail, fb, gallery, etc.). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are ZERO 3rd party apps that you can add to that list.
Lol, I cannot even vaguely imagine Apple trying this approach. People already think they're being controlling. Can you imagine the outrage if you could multitask but ONLY using the built in calendar, not your favorite 3rd party app, etc..?
My other idea was for Apple to add some additional requirements to developers, so that any app that could support it (split-screen multitasking) without diminishing/degrading the user's experience would be welcome to.

I never said it supported unlimited multitasking.
I was talking hardware resource priority when two apps are windowed.

As for supported apps, it's an artificial restriction Samsung implemented.
There are tweaks that require root that will enable the multiview function for all apps.

And in your opinion, this is an elegant way to support multiview & the approach you believe Apple should mimic?

It is ONE way, not the only way.
Split plane view works better on touch devices than actual windowed apps.
Samsung's MulitView does it nicely.
Is there room for improvement? Most definitely.

It is an interesting space; I'm looking fwd to seeing Apple's approach. Not as much as I am in seeing the multiuser iPad though! I hope that's the first iOS 7 feature they cover. :0) The concept of a "family" tablet is a great one. Especially, when that eventually ties in with the thumb sensor. Epic! Mom slides to unlock.. there are all her work emails, calendar, notes, etc. Junior slides to unlock there's his own background, games, educational apps, etc. That's interesting to me.. I wonder if each user can use their own iTunes account.

you're doing it wrong.....Siri knows the difference between my girlfriend, and my fiancee...have you told Siri who your fiancee is?

I should've been clearer - I say her name, not "call my fiance". I say "Call Jane Smith" - who makes up 80% of my call log - and Siri gives equal weighting to Jennifer and Jay and Joan and people I've literally never called before in my life.

They probably held a meeting to decide which other redneck sport Siri is to support next. "Hunt'n & fish'n", or "Pig bæt'n'" perhaps. Or, hopefully, a less evil, but equally Wild West, sport - WWE something. So Siri could read out the scores. Useless idiots!

The WWDC proved those of us, expecting a more worthwhile / civilised topic of discussion between Apple & Nuance, wrong. Well, at least the next iteration of the OS X will have a couple of obvious advantages over its predecessor (although I expect, some traditional omissions, as well). And yes, the Mac Pro is a thing of beauty! But that's about all.
