With cell service and wifi turned off, how many pictures on average can you take with an iPhone 4/4S before the battery dies? I googled this, but couldn't find anything too helpful.

I don't have an exact number (and I doubt someone will actually take photos until their phone dies to test this out for you), but I'm sure it's a lot. There are also many factors that play into this such as brightness.

A better question would be, "How many shots are you expecting to take?" Then we can tell you if it's reasonable or not.

I'd say no more than 100 in a given day, but spread out over the course of several hours.

I took about 250 pics today plus two videos. Had 3G on all day and full brightness. Unplugged from charger this morning at 6:00am and came back home around 3:00pm with about 45% bat life left. Made 0 calls, sent about 12 texts and 8 emails. - iPhone 4S

EDIT: Videos were less than 2 minutes each.

Good to know- thanks!

FWIW, on my 3GS, I usually do about 10 pictures a day and 15-30 minutes of video recording (I like to do videos on my bike rides) and end up with around 40% charge left. The recording really eats up battery!

Example:
3g on
wifi on but not connected bluetooth off
current battery ~50%
100 shots later 20-30%
1 hour length
medium brightness
BTW, for my curiosity, why would you be taking so many pics off your iPhone? :)

I'm going to France for a week and want to pack as light as possible. I'm taking my Olympus XA2 (a 35mm dynamo) for primary use, but plan on using my 4S for backup and bar shots that don't need to be of the highest quality. Just want to make sure my battery isn't gonna crap out in the middle of the day.

I took over 500 in the course of an hour or two, messing around with my three kids, and it barely put any form of a dent in my battery. At all.

i took just over 225 and it murdered my battery. this was with geo-tagging enabled.
