Apple's 5th Avenue store selling 30,000 on launch day, I can believe. There's no other Apple store on this planet that can process that many customers in one day. 3000 sounds more reasonable for a popular area.

Well I plan on finding out today or at least get as close to the right answer as possible.

Our local store last year had plenty I was 200th person in line and most people I front of me bought 2 unlocked phones each, only 15 people in front wanted carrier locked phones. With the demand this year it will be busy but at least you wont have to worry about the scalpers .if you are heading to a Canadian Store.

30,000 at one store. You people are smoking some serious stuff.

Do you realize how many people that is? ....

do the math. If 30,000 people had to walk in the front door, it would consume 1.4 seconds each over the course of a 12 hour day just to get in. If you had 100 sales people, you would then have 140 seconds (2 minutes) per customer.

Have to laugh.

not everyone gets 1 iphone, people grabs 2-3-4 of them.

While we're on the subject of stores, does anyone know if the Apple store can do a cross-upgrade (use an upgrade on a second line, but use my phone)?

I'm an October 5 baby, and I was thinking of going to the Apple store Friday to see if I can get a phone. I'm not sure how long it'll take for the pre-order to cancel I cancel while waiting for the line (I expect the cancellation system might be busy with people having the same idea).

My GF's line can upgrade for the same price. I know the ATT stores can use the upgrade on her line, but activate it on my line. Can the Apple store do the same? There's no way I'm dragging her down to the Apple store at an ungodly hour and she'll be leaving for work while I'm line anyway.

...

The ATT store can do it. Not sure about Apple.

But, why would you go to another company to do this sort of things with your phone? I would go to ATT store myself.

I'm expecting the ATT store to have less inventory than Apple. It's something I'm thinking of, though.

Yeah apple stores can do it. Worst case scenario you can always go to AT&T afterwards.

Maybe. But, what will the demand be? Folks tend to stand in line more at Apple stores than ATT. Or so it seems.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. This feels like one of those spy movies where I'm trying to quadruple- guess what the villain is doing.

lol obviously it would be impossible to get approximate numbers, but the one in my home town is small and inside a mall and i would say they had easy 30 thousand iphone 4 models available, they get a lot of all different models and chances are even better now that way more pre-order than ever before.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

I don't think anyone knows for sure unless you work for apple and have the inventory list. I know when I was trying to buy the ipad, the apple workers said they didnt know how many they were getting so people continued to stay in line and most ended up not getting it.

Since 3 times as many people preordered vs the I-4, then it is possible even less will be in line at the store?

Maybe?

(I think it was 600k I-4 vs 2m I-5)

500-600 or maybe more or even less. I think that's pretty realistic going by past years.

For the iPhone 4 which was the last phone I waited in line for, they ran out at about noon and there were still a few hundred people waiting in line. They started handing out tickets around nine or so when they had an idea of how many they had left. I think they said they had a few hundred left.

The Apple store group most likely has software that has tracked traffic trends from previous launches, and daily normal traffic. Then after much analysis it spits out the amount to send to each store. Other retailers like Walmart/Best Buy/AT&T/Verizon/Radio Shack, will get set amounts, and much less than an Apple store in the same cities.

If I got to the apple store an hour before they open, do you think I will be able to get 2 phones ?
