Numlock wont turn off!

At complete random my numlock came on and will not turn off.
Ive taken the keys off to ensure nothing is stuck under them. i have also cleaned the keyboard with air cans.
i am unsure why its on but i cannot figure out how to turn it off. thus my keyboard and trackpad are rendered completely useless until i find a way to turn this off. i am currently using my phone to control my laptop to post this.
any help would be huge. thanks in advance.

under system preferences > keyboard i turn caps lock functions to have no action but it doesnt save the setting. i change it go to main sys pref and go back and its restored to default. i cant believe how frusturating this is. and i have class in an hour where i use this machine
