@TzunamiOSX I wonder why we didnt test using tiger. Anyway, heres a video I just made. It also give a little base temp for the 6800 ultra (85c 🤨 thats hot in my book)

I did!! This morning I tried Prey 2006 using tiger (lauching the app from my leopard app folder), and voila no bugs. So now, since I dont like jumping from os to os on this G5, I’m considering migrating all my stuff to tiger if my audio software are compatible (should be).
Thanks for trying.
Glad that it works. I wish I found this out earlier. I've already bought a Radeon X1900XT 256MB waiting to be flashed for Mac. Hahaha.... I'll try the Flash first to see how much difference is between Quadro FX 4500 and Radeon X1900XT. If I find X1900XT better I might keep it in my Quad G5.
Running Tiger on separate drive isn't a bad idea, it just that my Quad G5 has limited sata connector.

Never thought of Tiger until @TzunamiOSX mentioned NVidia Currie architecture has a bug in the driver. Since each OSX version has a different graphic driver, so Tiger could be the quickest thing to test.

Really glad that we have figured this out. Any how, I do remember somewhere mentioned that Quadro FX 4500 has a special driver for our Powermac G5 (came in CD) out there. I've tried to look for it but I've never be able to uncover it.

I never used a fx4500 but I also have a flashed x1900gt in my quad. Compared to the 6800ultra, the x1900gt is the clear winner, especially when it comes to anti aliasing. Ati were the king of the hill in these times and it shows. King until the release of the monster 8800 gtx.

Edit: theres an nvidiafx.kext on leopard, could be for the fx4500. Maybe theres an optional driver to enable cuda.

While I’m waiting for my card to arrive ( its in Erlanger Kentucky atm) I modded my flashed x1900gt ‘mac edition’. The card I flashed is exactly the same as the real G5 edition.

The x1900xt macpro edition share the exact same board layout but have a double wide more beefier cooler and as a bonus, it push hot air out of the case and not backward like the gt card.

On the gt card, the svideo out is now blocked by the bracket but it doesnt create any interference. Everything bolt up perfectly. I’ve used the original gt xclamp for the gpu since it apply more pressure. Hope you like. Its fun, its like playing wth lego :p.

Doing some ‘R&D’ . I need to cut the front bracket so it can push air out and cut the heatsink to have a clearance for the big caps in the back. Thats more of a challenge than I thought. At least, that little aluminium heatsink from the original cooler will be replaced by that big hs with copper plate and heatpipe. Until I’m done I’l use a radeon 9600pro. For the fan, I didnt check yet, but I have high hope I can swap pcb and make new wire (6800U use 2 wire fan, 7800gtx 4 pwn fan). Also, I’l have to buff the mounting point on the 7800 cooler because it is about 0.015 inch higher and it doesnt make contact with the die.

The new cooler is almost a direct fit (same bolt pattern, same height)

What I did:

- Use the fan hub from the old cooler and glue it on the new fan bracket.
- Cut the back of the heatsink to make way for the capacitor
- Cut the front bracket to let air flow.
- Glue heatsink on vrm with home made thermal adhesive (just in case, why not)
- Use a mix of screw from the 7800gtx and 6800 with some washer and yadi yada.

Update: Oh no, the c-clip + modded spring combo I used is too tight and the fan stop spinning after booting. I’l have to take appart the whole card to find a solution.

Ok final update.

I did remove the shortened spring I made and now the fan spin freely.

Heres my temp:

Idle: 50c (was 70c)
Prey: 65c to 70c (was 85c, loaded from the same saved place, same test)

So, I hope it goes well for you. Cheers!

Hehe, i found the missing screws of my Zalman VF900-Cu inside my graphic card box. This mod is not sweet like yours, but it brings my 6800 Ultra down form 79°C to 57°C on idle and 64°C when running Prey on max. (shadows off)

My problem was, that the RAID Controller (with own fan) heat up the 6800 Ultra from 71°C around 79°C on idle, and got turbo fan when gaming. Now the GPU is much cooler

I have one of these that I got for my Radeon X800 XT for my MDD, because the stock fan failed. Turns out it doesn't fit in the case...
I noticed my 6800 in my G5 was idling at like 55° which I thought was high but apparently isn't.
I could use the heatsink on it, but would there be any benefit to using it over the factory one if it isn't running that hot?

55°C is a good temp. Is this a 6800, 6800 GT or 6800 Ultra?

With the better cooler you get longer life. I bring down the temp by over 20K on idle and 15K on hard 3D actions. i thing with you GPU the temperature difference in idle will be smaller, but on gaming the GPU will be much cooler and more silent.

You must shorten the knurled nuts too get the cooler inside the G5 (grind down until you find the brass in the middle).

Thanks for posting this up! It might be a bit off topic, but do you know of a good cooling setup for an ATI 9800 Pro? Mine has the original heatsink and the fan is going out. It would be nice to replace it with something better, but it's hard to tell what will fit.
