Only the old units are affected, the current GPUs being manufactured at the fabs have no issues whatsoever. And the failure depends on the environmental conditions, like heat, usage, etc. My friends mbp uses the nvidia chipset and it is still functioning perfectly, with the exception of a dirty keyboard.
