I have seen various warnings on Steam regarding poor graphics performance in El Capitain for people with nVidia hardware, and suggesting they do not upgrade.

Given Apple's poor record of providing updated drivers (MacBooks with the GT330m for example never got new drivers after Lion) and nVidia's new habit of providing unofficial drivers for OS X (finally), how do people feel about the very 'Windows' habit of downloading and maintaining drivers from vendors rather than Apple?

Nvidia officially only does this for Mac Pro towers. I prefer it but I would not do it with an all in one Mac, which is the entire line these days. OS X is useless for the best gaming anyway for reasons that have been debated to death here. I'm not going to fall on my knees for Metal either. Over the years I have seen too many new APIs and codecs get big hype from Apple and most never went very far.

That's a shame, I've been hoping for the last 4 or 5 years that Mac gaming would pick up. But you're right, it's borked one way or another and has been for a decent decade or more. I guess that's what Bootcamp is for!
