::::::UPDATE:::::::
Only looking for Rhythm/Music based games. Such as guitar hero or frets on fire.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I want to start playing some old games on my PowerMac G5. I would rather not upgrade the video card (I would rather use the money to buy games i can play, from feebay)

I just want to build a list up so i can look out for them and buy them. Thanks

I'm interested in:

flight simulators (to just fly around and fool around)

fps games,

if there are any games like Guitar Hero that can use my usb guitar that would be awesome. I dont think Frets on Fire works on PPC

Puzzle games

arcade games

I'm going to test my old copy of Sims 2 later

Post your recommendations below! Thanks! :apple:

Halo, Quake II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Postal 2, Call of Duty 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Alien vs. Predator, Max Payne, etc...

Don't know if you're into those games but those are pretty good ones with minimal system requirements.

EDIT 1: Diablo 2 is a good one as well. You can find it at most stores that sell electronics. Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc. Typically around $20.

CoD 2 struggles on my dual 1.8 G5 even with a 256MB ATI Fire GL card, which is about the best you can get for a PPC mac

I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet on my G5... just got all my software loaded from my G4, and the Universal Binaries from my Intel mini. Will give CoD2 a go now and see how it runs...

What's your system specs? I have a dual 2GHz, 4GB of ram and the 5200 w/ 64mb vRam.

Single 1.8GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600XT 128MB. I know I got the odd-ball single processor model, but with my current money supply (next to none :)) I can manage. Got this machine for $75.

When I played this on PC I had GeForce 6800 -based graphics card, can't remember if it was vanilla or LE -version, but even with it I couldn't play COD 2 with all settings high on 1024 x 768 if I remember correctly. I had 1 gig of ram and Athlon64 3200+ which performs better clock for clock than G5, it runs at 2GHz.

So I would definently recommend that you get atleast Dual G5 model and preferably high clocked since the multiprocessing optimization is probably not the best with old game like Cod2 which means that only one core will be working at high levels while the anoter might just focus on running the OS on the background. Also get GeForce 6800 or 7800 class of video card. Atleast 7800 models could be converted from PC version to Mac so if you could get one then it might be reasonable upgrade, I guess that real Mac-versions are bit pricey but haven't looked from some time.

These are system requirements:

PPC / Intel
Mac OS X 10.3.9
1.8 GHz PowerPC G5/Intel chipset
512 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 or ATI Radeon 9600 or higher
64 MB VRam
Supported Video cards: NVIDIA GeForce 5200, 6600, 6800, 7800 ATI Radeon 9600, 9650, 9700, 9800, X600, X800, X850, or faster.

Medal of Honor-- you might find for real cheap somewhere. Warcraft 3 will work with the fx5200 if you lower graphics settings. Original Star Craft as well. Those aren't fps obviously, but great games.

I don't know if you consider these puzzle games, more like strategy:
Sim city 4
Roller coaster tycoon 3
Zoo tycoon 2
C&C Generals & Zero Hour

All run on my eMac, so your G5 should be just fine.

That's because its a Workstation card, it pretty much sucks for gaming. I built my little brother a cheapo computer around when COD2 came out, Celeron D 3.0gzh, 512mb Ram, little 100gig hard drive. A PCI FX5200 I had laying around. And it played the game at medium-highish settings at a solid 50-60FPS.

An FX5200 should play most of those at low settings just fine, though I would look into upgrading for a low price if you can.

My Dual 1.8G5 has a FX5200, it chokes on HALO.

You have just named 3 of the most important games I have ever played. Thanks

It's 99% the same hardware as a Radeon X800 XT, and those are the drivers' it's flashed with. barefeats.com benchmarks also show the flashed FireGL running up on the level of the 6800 Ultra

CoD2 was a complete nightmare on my machine. Even at all LOW settings. Completely unplayable.

Try Battlefield 1942 and Ghost Rceon, those ran well on my G5 iMac. American McGee's Alice was another fun game I recall that ran well on the G5.
