To answer the other question about Apple's cables - I have no idea why they went for custom PCI power connectors.

Because if they build a major component that doesn't have some stupid proprietary piece of crap on it, their collective heads would explode.

Do any of you who ordered the 285 have access to a 2006 or 2007 Mac Pro to see if it'll work in there once the drivers are installed?

would LOVE to be wrong....but look at track record

1. ALL ATI cards work in ALL Mac Pros

2. ALL NVIDIA cards are EFI bound (32 OR 64 Mac Pro)

As I have a 1st Gen, REALLY hope the Unicorns win this time

Oh don't get me wrong, I really don't expect it to work. But I'll be in the US in two weeks and need to pick up a video card while I'm there.

Hoping it'll be this, otherwise I'll be buying a 1GB 4870 to reflash. Ironically, I don't give a damn about the mini displayport or the price of the Apple unit, it's the fact that it's 512MB that pisses me off.

All this having been said, I was under the impression the GT120 works in *.Mac Pro?

Also noticed on the website that it comes with 2 6-pin power cables. I guess we can put that discussion to bed now.

I you look on the SL specs site, it makes no mention of OpenCL working with the GTX.

OpenCL
NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GTS, Geforce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130.
ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870

Maybe since Apple doesn't offer it as BTO, but it's still kind of worrying. Any thoughts on this matter?

Nvidia is onboard with the OpenCL spec so I would be EXTREMELY surprised if the GTX doesn't support it. Even if it doesn't right now, I'm assuming support (through drivers) could be added in the future. There isn't all that much that would be able to take advantage of OpenCL yet anyways (well, at least as I assume).

*edit* I just registered this screenname on the EVGA forums and asked this question. I'll report back with the results.

Any guess if it would be cheaper getting this card direct from Apple in Europe or importing through OWC in the states?

lol. nice. I might just have to watch that episode now :)

Anyways, I got a really quick response from a moderator over at the EVGA forums. Hurray for that.

Hi,

The Mac edition supports CUDA for now, and the upcoming OpenCL later that will be utilized with Snow Leopard.

I'm guessing it wasn't specified because SL isn't actually released yet. But peace of mind is always good.

Sounds reasonable. Could you go ahead and ask them to make the mac version cost the same as the PC version? ;)

Just ordered from eVGA's web site. Their overnight is a bit more expensive, but they have it in stock. With any luck I should have one Wed. I can't wait! :) I had flashed a 4870, but between iffy support for my second 23" ACD and the GPU frying up after only a month; I decided to go for a legit supported one even though it is unfortunately more expensive.

Happy with my second monitor as well. I had got one of the 23" ones last summer before getting my Mac Pro. I started WoW'ing recently which pushed me into a huge want for a second monitor. Looked far and wide for the discontinued 23's even looked at used ones on Ebay. When all hope had failed I stumbled into my local (50+ miles away) BestBuy a week and a half ago and they still had 2 brand new and sealed by their Mac section! I was polite and asked if they wanted to make a deal on one of them as they had been discontinued for close to a year now. After about 20 minutes, the manager came back... $599! Sold!

I'm hoping this heralds the entrance of other companies into the mac graphics card market, but that's a little optimistic right now. Still, the market is already more open and full than it has been for the last ~6 years. Good news all around.
