Update: I added times for a MP6.1 12c 64Gb dual AMD D700 running same tests/same Adobe CC 2015.2 release, but on 10.11.6 instead of 10.12.4. The Nvidia equipped mac is a 2012 cMP 12c 3.06Ghz 64Gb.

With the news of Pascal drivers I couldn’t help wonder what how a new card (GTX 1060 6Gb) would improve over my current GTX660 2GB. Editing and exporting 4K HVEC from my DJI Phantom 4 Pro using Adobe CC is my main use. Since I have XboxOne & PS4 for gaming, I wanted maximum price/performance - I wasn’t out to spend a heap of $ for FPS performance in games.

I compared a few of last gen cards and looked over Puget systems Adobe gtx comparisons - but of course wasn’t getting the answer to how much improvement I’d see over my specific 3yo card - so before I slotted the gtx1060 in I did some quick tests using same system as per my sig.

Nvidia driver 378.05.05.05f02 CUDA 8.0.81

1. Adobe Premier/Media encoder, using CUDA - export 4k HVEC 100mbps —> 4k HVEC 25mbps
gtx660 19m 48s
gtx1060 19m 31s
d700x2 19m 02s

2. Adobe Pr/Media encoder using CUDA -export 4k HVEC 100mbps —> HD 1080 15mpbs
gtx660 5m 18s
gtx1060 4m 16s (4m 8s with CUDA 8.0.83)
d700x2 3m 59

3. Premier render CUDA mercury playback 4K HVEC clip with Lumetri FX
gtx660 4m 14s
gtx1060 4m 15s (4m 14s new CUDA)
d700x2 1m 24s

SO best is 20% on rescaled export, I guess without rescalling or processing FX mainly down to CPU - hoping to see improvement on 4K export as I have reconvert all my footage down to 50Mbps to play on my 4K tv.
However, when I had a quick play in Adobe Photoshop RAW importer and Nikon Capture NX2 which I use to process DNG and NEF images respectively I immediately noticed a big performance increase in screen redraws - usually as I pan around 24MP images in the raw viewers it lags behind and you wait a second for the ‘blocks’ to draw in higher res - pretty much all gone. This alone made me feel better - much smoother.

Finally Unigine Heaven…yeah no games, but feeling a little despondent I had to have a look at what my new card can do if it wasn’t going to transform video editing:

OpenGL 1920x1080 8xAA Quality: Ultra: Tessellation Extreme

gtx660 21fps min 6.3, max 51.8 score 530
gtx1060 51.7fps min 8.3 max 96.7 score 1302

by comparison my wife’s pc (i7-4790 3.6Ghz Windows NT 6.2)
gtx770 37.8fps min 19.2 max 85.7 score 952

Hopefully Pascal will improve as Nvidia drivers get updated - I wonder if there plenty of potential left as the drivers improve?
