According to the details Nvidia mentions that the GTX680m is 28nm which in term means that it takes less energy for the electrons to move through the card, and less distance to travel equaling far better performance that the GTX670m chip which has 45nm.

Well that's what I remember off the top of my head. Clocks also play a big part but the 'nm' distance, far greater.

680M availability

I did some checking around and noticed that you can order a BTO laptop from Origin PC with the 680M (for a large price premium), but it won't ship until 7/23.

Alienware on the otherhand doesn't even show it as available as a BTO option yet. I used their live chat to talk to a rep and they won't give you a date as they're not sure yet themselves when it'll be available.

None of this means much for the iMac of course, but the end of July at least seems possible with that 7/23 ship date for Origin.

This wouldn't really affect Apple's production as Apple would have probably signed a deal with Nvidia a while back giving them access to the chips and they would probably be in production right now imbedding them in the new iMacs. That's if they went with this card.
