Nvidia today announced that its cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is gaining native support for Macs with Apple silicon chips.

The updated GeForce NOW app for macOS will feature improved performance and lower power consumption on Macs powered by the M1 family of chips, including the latest MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac mini models.

Native support for Apple silicon Macs will require version 2.0.40 of GeForce NOW, which should be rolling out soon. The update will also make it easier to discover new games to play in the app with an added "Genre" row at the bottom of the "Games" menu, and adds server-side rendering frame rates to the Streaming Statistics Overlay.

On the Mac, GeForce NOW is available on the web and as an app. The cross-platform, subscription-based service allows users to stream hundreds of games across multiple devices, including Fortnite. Pricing is set at $9.99 per month in the United States.

Nvidia faces serious competition in its core GPU business from advance CPU+GPU SoC solutions like what Apple delivered with the M1. If Intel and AMD follow suit and up their integrated GPU game then Nvidia will be the odd man out trying to sell discrete GPUs to a very small sliver of the market. This is why they wanted to buy ARM - they knew the future direction of high-integrated SoC's and needed ARM to reach a wide market for their own solution.

I'm just really disappointed in GeForce Now. The closest server is around 50km from my location but the latency is just bad, even when I have an ethernet cable connected. In comparison, Stadia is hard to distinguish from a local game even when the nearest server is like 2 countries away (560km).

Edit: I manually selected the closest server on GeForce Now and it runs flawlessly. The network test shows 3ms latency.

That’s weird I have the opposite experience. I opted for the higher 3080 tier and on wired FIOS I literally could not detect any input lag at all. Very happy with it, but also unhappy that I can resume my gaming addiction even without gaming hardware ?

And, it could be another example of Apple skating to where the puck will be. CUDA’s preeminence will start to wane over time as better performance will be attained by using non-CUDA methods supported by those other chipsets.

That's pretty good, will be interesting to see what the lag is like. I used it before and it's pretty good, they do have a free version of people want to test it too. But you do have to own the games too stream on the platform but these can be Steam games. Useful if you have an Xbox Series X and like Uncharted like me, I don't want to plug in my old PS4 jet engine. Sony have blocked it's games working on GeForce Now on Xbox unfortunately.

It’s an interesting technology if they can continue to improve it. Right now it’s quite limited. You have to play for the virtual hardware, then the games separately. If it was all included within one reasonable price I would consider it. Latency is acceptable for certain games, but you won’t want to play any e-sports or serious PvP with it.

Resolution is also very limited. I think 1080P at best if I recall.

Much better to just pay for a gaming PC at this point. It will likely be cheaper in the long run, and be a better gaming experience.

I hope they improve this though, as it seems to be the only way to get decent titles on the Mac. :(

Would be better if Apple integrated Nvidia's GPUs into their Macs. Either directly putting in their hardware in their Macs or at the very least allowing drivers being written for them. As it stands, Macs are absolute garbage for gaming... no wonder Hackintoshes are so popular.

I play cyberpunk on it and its fantastic. at 1080p I can't really tell the Difference from across the room and I got in at the tail end of the founders so I only pay $5 a month. would def cost way too more to game any other way. There is a more expensive tier that works at higher resolution and frame rate but I don't want to pay for that personally as its a major bump.

Ok, doing the network test in GeForce Now shows a stable connection with 3ms latency. Pinging the closest Stadia server gives me 27ms latency. I tried to just select the server manually in GeForce Now and it fixed my problem! It's so fast now I can't even tell if the game is not just running locally.

What games have you been playing?

Curious how the Battlefield series will play.

I’ve been playing Cyberpunk, maxed out, rtx full on. All perfect on M1 MBA and M1 iPad pro - looks fantastic on that. Great to have a native version but doubtful it will make a performance difference. Totally worth it. I just got thd standard version. On my Studio its a bit disappointing as I have an ultra wide monitor but none of the Geforce tiers support it. With streaming this good there’s not much point in getting a souped up pc or trying to emulate on mac… as long as the games you want are supported. Dying light 2 next :) worth paying over the free option as there’s zero wait times. Rtx is nice but you have to turn it on. Tbo if you forget you don’t really notice

Oh having said that witcher 3 on crossover is stunning on studio max as it runs maxed out and full res on 38” ultrawide and +60fps so better than playing on Geforce now!
