I have a MacPro 5,1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon. 1 processor, 12gb of RAM, stock 5770 GPU so non-metal. Everything is stock except the amount of ram. i am an audio engineer too, it doesn't bother me to fully install High Sierra but i really want to have an nvme boot disk. What should i do? Is it possible?
Thanks

Get a METAL GPU and update your BootROM. This is the sticky thread about the topic, read the first post:

I think that i found one GPU but i really couldn't find anything on it. It is a Radeon HD 7950 but made by the company PowerColor (PowerColor HD7950) is it compatible, both with mac and metal. I dont care if indont have a boot screen. will it fit in my tower. After that i could do the firmware update
