You got to understand. Lower iphone theft means more quality doughnut shop time.

Yeah, I know, it's a stereotype, but some places give police free coffee in exchange for their presence there, especially late at night. Cheap security for the shop owners when the bad guys know cops may drop in anytime.

Showing a reversed (mirrored) iPad, check.

I don't get it, if NYPD are posting this, and advising people, the Internet Crime/iOS Theft Department has obviously not heard of "DFU Mode"

I was able to restore my phone to factory settings with a passcode lock and find my iPhone turned on

Yes, you can restore it through DFU mode, but it would (should?) not have let you activate it without your account details.

but they neglect to mention that downloading IOS7 is in conflict with most corporate IT policies at this point. If you work for NBC for example, you are prohibited from installing IOS 7 on your company owned phone.
The last few major updates HOSED Exchange meeting requests.
I'd also add that IOS7 on an iPhone 4 is awful slow. I wouldn't advise anyone with a 4 to make the jump.

Someone on a different site was speculating that the flyers are primarily aimed at thieves rather than owners. If thieves know that iOS7 devices are (probably) useless if this feature is activated, they might be less tempted to steal them.

Exactly. The criminals need to know that they're just wasting their time and risking their freedom for nothing.

NYPD For Sale?

Something about this smells awfully fishy.

The NYPD, who are so technologically savvy
that their flyer looks like it was printed on a
1950 era high school mimeograph machine,
are touting the security advances in iOS 7.

Give me a break.

I am wondering, who did Apple pay off and for how much?
The police are supposed to spend their time keeping the streets safe,
Not shilling for Apple.

Why so sour? The flyer looks fine to me....

It's not like people are forced to update anyway.

It will still ask for your password when restoring with DFU. When GM dropped I restored from beta with DFU mode.

Nope. I just did a DFU restore just to test this, and activation lock kicked right in and prevented me from activating without my AppleID.

They are putting this out there to help you people, no need to make fun of them because they're not graphic designers. It was probably just made by some desk cop. Sorry if he isn't as cutting-edge as you are with all the latest fonts and icons, etc.

Don't forget spelling.

What if the NYPD didn't actually put these up but some random guy trying to get attention?

I remember when the NYPD was near the subway entrance by Columbia University telling people about basic safety precautions. Most people were very appreciative.

Leave it to internet trolls to turn a good deed into a bad thing.

U r very astute, or drinking way too much caffeine,…..lol

On a serious note, this has got to be an unprecedented, but logical endorsement of the new iOS, and a testament to Apple's meticulousness in designing software that works and is effective. Logical, cause it could free-up a lot of police resources, that are now spent on cell-phone and tablet thefts.

Hope this activation lock works as advertised, and can not be circumvented, cause I hate egg on my face. ;)

Yes!

Well, speaking of security and my fingerprints falling into the wrong hand I have a question for the NYPD and users here: can you disable this TouchID and still secure your iPhone 5S the old fashioned way with a PIN?

Great, everything in one 'secure' place for anyone to steal with a copied latex fingerprint...or a hacked off finger!

Yes - I set one up for one of the staff here and you don't need to use the fingerprint scanner. You can just use the regular numeric code if you want.

That meeting request issue got fixed.

I work for a fortune 100 business and we all jumped to IOS7 day of release, even the management. No issues EXCEPT the Lantronix print to corporate printers failed to work out of the box. We now have a software update that got that going in less than 6 days of release.

Lantronix boxes let IOS devices connected to wifi print to large corporate photocopier/fax/printer units (Ricoh/Xerox/Canon etc).

Can't help but think this is more to do with law enforcement backdoors, than concern for your lost phone.
iOS 7 is constantly pestering me to turn on data & turn off airplane mode (to the point that it's almost a deal-breaker), when iOS 6 never did.

With a limited lifespan, Jobs could afford to be way less compliant with slave-monitoring than current management can afford to be. Witness Mr Flash joining Apple, and what Adobe really does with "ad tracking".

Just saying.

Tax dollars hard at work.......come on, let's do something productive with that money, like teaching people not to steal in schools.

I don't think the NYPD should be spending time and resources on marketing Apple's iOS. Personally.

Not sure I get this. They're already spending millions dealing with the theft of these devices. When the next ios6 devices go missing, they can't choose not to show up to take a report and spend the next x months tracking and following leads. It's a build in expense they are already paying. If even if $10000 is spent on these fliers, the ROI will be massive.

These posters are a giant "ad" for Apple and iOS. I don't see as much attention to other methods of securing other devices, etc.

And I'm entitled to my personal opinion. As unpopular as it might be with you. And that's not to discount the advantage I see in promoting security features in the iPhone. But I don't think it's the NYPD's job to do so.

This is great news and much better than the flyer they handed to me last year!
