People keep talking about Apple TV, and I keep telling them there is more potential in "iWatch" and "iGlasses". Plus, Apple already makes Apple TV, they just need to make an app store for it. Honestly at this point, anything Apple makes with an App Store will be wildly successful.

A watch could allow for the start to the end of passwords... let that sink in...

also proximity wake and sleep, FaceTime, streaming music from iCloud, pedometer, remote that works with Apple TV, voice recorder, and could be the next ... small thing. oh and it could give you the time...

The passwords thing is interesting but how much proximity would be the max? Sounds like security issues galore.

FaceTime with a watch? Talk about gorilla arms.

Music? Most people don't want to plug headphones into their watch. It could Airplay to other devices though.

As for wearing a watch being obsolete--I wonder if the people who rely on their cell phones to tell the time don't have anywhere important to go. I'm often in situations where I'm counting the minutes before I need to leave somewhere or arrive at somewhere and check my watch every 2-3 minutes. Pulling my cell phone out every 2-3 minutes seems like a hugely annoying amount of effort.

Apple, we've found your target demographic: the guy who thinks it's too much work to pull a phone out of his pocket.

On a serious note, iWatch? Hmm, it will most likely be pricey, say £300 or $400, need recharging every day or week, be stylish, but it will also always have the risk of the software being updated and brocken in some way, like iOS is.
No doubt it'll be useful and easy to use, but offer nothing different to an iPod or iPhone.
I still think of a watch as jewellery as well as a useful tool, not sure if I could see an iWatch like that?

Bluetooth paired with iPhone, etc, would be nice to get an alert and/or vibration on the iWatch when bluetooth connection is lost.

Too many times I'm much farther than bluetooth range before I realize I've left my iPhone behind.

I think an apple branded "smart" watch will be a huge product for apple. And I don't know why, but for some reason I think Apple will make a beautiful watch, unlike anything we have ever seen. I also think it will be very useful and will catch on with the masses quickly. At first I had the thinking that needing a smaller device to get info from my already small device, both of which would be attached to me, was really stupid. But the more i think about it, the more I think it would be great. I don't know how many times a day I will get a text message, or my phone will ring, and my hands will be dirty, or i'll be in a position where pulling my phone from my hip is a real PIA. But if that info was displayed on my wrist where I could glance at it no matter what I was doing, I think I could really get used to it. And I also like the idea of it being my "password" so to speak. so whenever I was within a certain distance of any of my computers or devices, the watch would log me in automatically….And also having the watch alert you if you ever left your phone laying somewhere and walked away.

There are so many cool possibilities and functions that a smart watch could offer. It just has to be done right. And design is going to be the key to success.

Why does this thread remind me of the rumor threads of iPad?

Because its MR. The comments are always the same old song w/ few new verses around here when any new Apple product or product idea hits the radar. It's been this way since the iPod was mocked. It's a solid track record... If it fails on MR general consumer adoption is highly likely.

Bottom line: the crowd here is kinda like Eskimos declaring air conditioning is a stupid concept. Nobody needs a machine to cool their homes, cars, and offices. That's just silly because every other environment on the planet is just like the oe here!

How about arms length? All these devices that you are really concerned about security, are used within arms length to be useful. If the user is separated by more than a few feet from the device, and it effectively becomes a brick to anyone else ... that's a good thing. Hopefully, Apple gives us a way to do this without having to wear a freaking stupid sh** watch thingy (for those that don't like wearing watches of course :D)

There is no functionality that can replace "Jewelry".

An apple watch would only be usable in sports world or among unfashionable nerds that would otherwise carry a calculator watch.

Most people would rather hide their functional electronics device in their pocket so as to not ruin their personal appearance with something that doesn't match.

The watch doesn't even exist yet so how could you possibly know what functions it will have or what it looks like... (Never seen an Apple product of recent history that wasn't decent looking at worst BTW.) That is my point. All you can come up with are features of existing products, not something novel.

Maybe this is why they changed the iPod nano. Because they're going to release an actual watch now???

It won't do anything a current smart watch or wrist exercise device can, plus you have the iPod and iPhone to look to.

not to keep beating on the "iWatch is a bad idea" thing. And YES despite the sound arguments, that "anything for or against is simply a blind statement because we really have no idea what Apple is actually creating that is beyond our current understanding of our limited technological perspective", its just not going to happen.

It's a technological idea that was cool decades ago, that's all it is. In practical modern times it makes little sense.
It's like all the futuristic movies decades ago where everyone in 2010+ had laser guns instead of bullets. Cool stuff, but not only is it realistically power hungry unreasonable but also not very good tactically if you can see where the laser is coming from, you give yourself away.

Back to watches, I like dick Tracy & knight rider too.

And Lets not forget the art of stealing watches may be forgotten but not lost! I've seen watches taken on a handshake or casual bump while walking.

This is a watch.

No, THIS is a watch. And yes, I own this. I call it the Conversation Starter. The looks I get are worth the price alone. I've spoken to many a stranger simply because they were curious enough to ask me about it.

Nope.

Stupid idea IMO.

No it's a great idea. Make an Apple watch. Call it the iWatch. Put the :apple: on it. Charge a bizzillion dollars for it. People will camp out to be the first to own it.

Status symbol much?

Could be....alot of people, myself included, have a wristband and wear it like a watch....with even more functionality, loadable apps, linked to my iphone with it's own little camera.....oh yeah, FaceTime wristwatch....way cool....

What it could do...

List of things that the iWatch (but don't think of it as a watch) could be used for other than just a watch and as an extension of an iPhone:

- proximity password/key (can't use iphone unless it's near, open doors or even start your car)
- facetime
- health and sports (pedometer, heart rate, Nike+, etc.)
- quick map
- appleTV Remote
- simple notifications (email, text, voice) with white text on black background for the annoying texters during movies
- sports, stock, etc. updates that can be looked at when you shouldn't be looking at your phone
- Siri, to do most anything without having to get your phone out of your pocket, purse, etc. (make phone calls, texts, etc.)
- music player
- GPS
- NFC
- proximity from iPhone alert
- Find My iPhone/iPad
- most of the above but also with your desktop/laptop
- camera?

And if it were waterproof…

If it's to be used without an iPhone, I believe it will lack a lot of the functionality that could make it truely awesome. IMO, let the iPhone do most of the work and use the "iWatch" as mostly just a watch when the iPhone isn't around. Of course certain things would still work great without the iPhone being around (proximity password/key, health and sports tools, appleTV Remote)

As Long as it's just a watch

It's no good at all. Any idiot can tell time.

But the Tognazzi (sp?) story a few items down made me think that the time-keeping function is the least of what a "reinvention" of the watch would be. Siri, 2-part authentication by NFC or Bluetooth or-- And Siri. And some kind of touch. Its own apps? Yes. Up-close "Find my iPhone" when your phone's in a pile of coats or something.

Oh, wait. You think the iPhone is a... phone?

When can we drop the phone numbers, and use e-mail address routing for voice and vision too?
