I really don't understand this. On the O2 site is says the following in regards to existing O2 customers:

If you were an O2 customer or upgraded on or before 18th September 2007
You can switch to an O2 tariff for iPhone without paying any remaining monthly charges on your existing contract.

I read this as: if you've been on O2 for anything over a month or two, you can pay the price of the iPhone, have your existing contract written off, and start a new contract with O2 for the iPhone.

So I called O2 and the lady that answered agreed with my interpretation but said she had only just heard about this deal and was not 100% sure. I am with O2 through Carphone Warehouse so she said I should give them a ring too.

So I rung CW and the prick that answered the phone had absolutely no clue about the deal, I had to navigate him to the site, to the passage, he read it, and gave me the most nonsensical interpretation I ever heard that basically amounted to him disagreeing with my interpretation with a garbled stab at another.

So really, what's the deal?! I have about a year on my existing contract, I can't get an iPhone unless this deal behaves like it reads.

It means exactly what it says. Providing you signed up with an O2 contract before the 18th of September this year you can buy the iphone and migrate your current contract to an iphone tarrif without paying a penalty.

If you signed up for your O2 contract at the end of september onwards you have to pay an extra £210 to get out of your contract.

Its like this to stop people getting an expensive free upgrade like an N95 and then buying an iphone.

i have been having the same problem multiple visits to both 02 and carphone warehouse( different stores), also multiple calls to there call centres and that what i was getting ,

however i managed to get this peice of info

as long as you had your contract before sept 18th, You will be able to cancel without penalty.

this is not a contract migration this is a contract cancelation

buy your iphone, activate through itunes (including credit check)
once done ( or if it asks in the process) contact carphone warehouse and request a pac code, enter this this will transfer your number. at the same time tell carphone warehouse your account details etc for iphone and they will cancel it down refunding any deposit if applicable.

my problem is i got my phone (n95) in august paid £75 deposit month later tryed to get my wife a phone and they refused, so what happens if i buy an iphone and get refused another contract (even though i already have 1 and just want to transfer.......... i think we need a little clarity after all we are less than 13 days away from launch..

hope the above helps

Nice work gazzz! So the guy I spoke to at CW was talking our his arse.

And this works with both O2 and O2 via. Carphone Warehouse? Sweet.

Do we get to keep our handsets? I only have a cheapass PEBL but it'd be nice to sell it and fund the iPhone.

Yes this is just the method for carphone warehouse because we are not direct o2 customers it isnt a problem for 02 customers at all. and yes you keep your phone!!!!! im selling mine to pay for the iphone ( so it is subsidised afterall :)

Do I have to buy my iPhone from a Carphone Warehouse branch or will an O2 branch do?

And it seems juuust a tad risky to buy the iPhone first and wait for the whole contract cancellation deal to be sorted out afterward. I guess I should call Carphone Warehouse just to check it out. Are they helpful at all or still a bit clueless?
