I've got about 11 months to run on my current iPhone contract. As far as I can see, o2 are giving me a new phone for a mere 7 months contract. Not a bad deal as far as I can see. What you are describing is standard practice for any contract phone you take out.

Exzactly, only had my phone on contract for 4-5 months, now getting another while getting me out of this one.

Er, while I'm not agreeing that it's worthless (though to the carrier it is), I can't understand how you need it explaining to you how it aged and lost value during the keynote. The hardware has been superseded, simple as that.
But 8GB first gen iPhones are still selling for more than £250 on eBay. Sounds like people could get their £269 back and upgrade to a new iPhone. Or if people bought from O2 when they were reduced to £169 that they can make a healthy profit. Looks like the first gen iPhone has (at least for now) increased in value, and Jobs' keynote hasn't changed it.

If anything the keynote/announcement of the 3G actually increased the price, since it revealed the whole in store activation thing.

Bailed out of your original contract, subsidised price on new, better model, hugely increased wi-fi coverage by virtue of new agreement with BT Openzone?

I'm not sure o2 could have done any better really. They've certainly shown AT&T how it should be done.

So, no, your rant is quite the opposite of sane

Cancelling contract

I don't think that there is the option for cancelling a contract and taking up a PAYG phone. No matter what price you pay for the new phone.

I am sure the option PAYG is only for new customers.

I only hope that eventually they give me the option of unlocking my old phone.
