That might make sense where you live but with a name like PlayBook people over here are going to assume it's a gaming device.
Even if it was meant for consumers, leaving out the one thing(besides email and calendaring) that BB consumers keep their devices for(BBM), is another dumb move.
It's a shame, because the PlayBook is a stellar device, but RIM's rushing it to Market, with a US-centric naming strategy, whilst bereft of the killer features that RIM built their reputation on, will see it fail to gain any traction elsewhere. Only the RIM die-hards will embrace it.
It's like Apple launching the iPad, but saying "Safari, iPod and Video apps will come in 6 months".

Because if you lose it there is no personal information on the tablet. The point is to connect it to a BlackBerry.

Right or wrong, I do understand their decision.

Sorry, that's not why there's no e-mail client on the PlayBook at the moment (if it were, then they'd never release one, but they have already announced it will be included in a future update).

According to Crackberry.com, the reason there isn't a native client is for security reasons, just not the ones you specified: Basically BlackBerry did not have the time to complete an Email client in Qnx that could communicate with the BlackBerry Infrastructure in a manner that was as secure as their phones, or as secure as they'd like it to be.

Therefore, rather than releasing what they considered to be an insecure e-mail client, they decided to launch without one at all.

So, the real reason there is no email client is simply that BlackBerry didn't get it finished in time...

"PLAYBOOK" like a football playbook. A football player studies his playbook

It's the corporate worlds work playbook. A CEO will study his "PLAYBOOK" They explained it that way when they first introduced it months ago.

It's not like a play book as in child's play.

Hmmmmm. If you say so.

No wonder O2 have passed on it over here -- apart from the user-experience issues they mention, the name just sounds idiotic.

O2 looks smart after yesterday's quarterly earnings report from RIM. I see some RIM supporters on the Net saying hey, they shipped 500,000 units in that quarter! Who cares? How many did they sell? That's what they are not telling us, and that tells us plenty.

I made a comment here a few weeks ago about how RIM is heading downward, and I got called out on it by people telling me that RIM's sales were great and I didn't know what I was talking about. Who looks right now?

May sound idiotic, but it makes you wonder why Americans dominate nearly every sport? Maybe from studying their playbooks? ;)

I must have forgotten about their domination of football (soccer), rugby and cricket. Probably the 3 largest sports in the UK. I accept America dominates American sports that most other countries don't play like football (American), baseball and basketball.

Umm... This is a little bit off-topic, but do Americans really "dominate nearly every sport?"

Golf? No. Soccer? Don't make me laugh. Tennis? Rugby? Cricket? Formula One? Hockey? The best players seem to be Canadians or Russians. Sailing? Badminton? Archery?

I'll grant you that US teams do very well at dominating the World Series, the NFL, and NBA finals. But thats hardly what I'd call a level playing field.

Really, did you just say America doesn't dominate at hockey? Apparently, you haven't watched the news in the last week.

And did you pick archery, sailing, badminton, cricket out because you couldn't find any real sports that weren't dominated by the US?

Soccer/football... Remind me again what the score was the last time US played the UK, just this past June? ;)

As for Formula 1, why not mention MotoGP or NASCAR too?

The UK have probably never played the US: we play soccer/football as individual constituent nations. NASCAR is another US only sport that no-one else cares about. And the US does not dominate MotoGP (the last time an American won the championship was 2006).

Yeah, I was referring to England, and you know it. Just still ashamed are we? :D

The most athletic sports are dominated by American athletes. That's all that matters.

Fixed that for ya! :D

Football not futbol is the most athletic sport on the face of the earth, so my point is still valid.

The combination of size, speed, strength, agility, quickness, and endurance that's necessary is unmatched by any sport known to man. There's a reason why there's a demand for NFL games in other countries.

Blackberry is going down, the writing is quite plainly on the wall for everyone to see. A 20% loss of stock value in one day is blistering, but it's only the beginning. At RIM it takes two CEOs to not understand the mobile market, yet at most companies only one village idiot is required. RIM's leadership quite obviously has its head in the sand. The problem with that strategy? When a pack of wolves comes your way, and it has, if you don't pull your head out of the sand you will end up as lunch meat. Well, here we are.

What should be particularly telling is that Apple is sitting on enough cash (over $70B?) to buy Nokia, Samsung, RIM, Nokia and HTC combined. Yet Apple isn't gobbling up its competitors. Why? Aside from the obvious anti-trust issues, Apple is investing in new technologies and innovation that will drive the company forward and continue defining new product categories and market segments. Apple's is the model of innovation and corporate responsibility.
