Exactly the same experience as jcborden, restarting fixed 3G for a while, but it would "break" with the same error message if left for 24 hours. In the end, I did a factory restore through itunes, then set it up as a new ipad. On set up i didn't turn on iCloud (I did this later) and didn't sync apps with my Mac (I unticked that option in itunes). I then manually installed apps through the app store. Bit of a faff because I had to set up my email etc again.

Seems to be working fine now (touch wood) and the 3G is actually much faster than when it quasi worked previously.

An update - following the reboot my 3G access worked fine for a while and then stopped. A little playing found that it would work until I connected with wifi and then would after disconnecting from wifi I would just get "could not activate cellular network".

I spoke to Apple support who suggested two things:

1. Request a new SIM card - not sure how this would help, was working fine in my iPad 2, and in the 3 until using wifi.

2. As I did a restore from my iPad 2 to the iPad 3, try a factory reset.

Well I have tried the factory reset and am pleased to report that it is now working correctly!!!

Exactly the same issue here. I'd rather not restore as new just yet, and was wondering whether I had to return my iPad by Friday.

I also wondered whether it is because I am using the T-mobile PAYG iphone4 sim (an amazing deal for an occasional user - £10 SIM, 12 months of 500MB a month) rather than a dedicated iPad SIM.

But reading the responses here it seems we need to wait for a software update.

Unfortunately, I think you will find that it just works for a while and then stops again, at least that is what happened to me. I initially thought it was fixed after the fresh set up, but it stopped again after a while.

The T-Mobile deal is amazing and I was happily using it in my iPad 2 and am now happily using it in my iPad 3, except for the restarts.

I am fairly convinced that it is an iOS 5.1 issue and not hardware. Fingers crossed anyway :)

So I have just spoken to Apple Support about this (again) and they say I need to request a new SIM from T-Mobile...

My question is, are there any differences in the SIM cards used for the iPad 3. I thought they were just the normal micro SIM's. The issue with calling T-Mobile is that I have been using the great iPhone 4 free internet offering :)

Has anyone gotten a 'new' iPad 3 SIM or do the networks just give you a blank response saying that it is just a micro SIM? Given that there is no 4G connectivity in the UK I wasn't expecting to have to change the SIM...

Took my Three microSIM out of my old iPad 1, stuck it in my new iPad 3. Works perfectly. No faffing around with APNs or anything like that. YMMV.

What's the latest on this?

I'm heading to an apple store tomorrow to have my iPad replaced due to particles under the glass. I'll let you know if it's fixed with a new one - highly unlikely!
