I too have an O2 Simplicity contract (via Carphone Warehouse) which I have had for about 18 months. I will be upgrading to iPhone 3G on the 11th at CPW. They have said that there will be no need for a credit check as I already have an account with them.

That the crux of this post - o2 are NOT now taking pre-orders for iPhone contracts but these simplicity contracts do ensure you pass the credit check - and so can get the iPhone whenever you want

OTOH you could just do the credit check.

For the OP where he's actually got a use for the Simplicty SIM it makes sense. For most people, not so much.

I agree, o2 are not taking pre-orders for iPhone 3G. I apologise.

I am happy however that I will get use out of this current SIM for these remaining 11 days, and that I can upgrade to iPhone on the 11th, at o2, straight away, without penalty.

Spot on! You found a short-cut and it works for you! Let us know how you get on a week on Friday.

There's one born every minute - he saw you coming and took your cash.
You should wait and have patience like everyone else on here.

Hey - the guy has asked the questions and is sure he has a deal - lets wait and see how it works for him

He's said he needed the sim anyhow

We're all iPhone guys/girls here - chill

The O2 store I went into yesterday said that from 4th of July they were accepted pre-registration for the iPhone, basically you get 3/4 of they way through the process, up to the point that they know whether or not they will give you the tariff, then you walk in on the 11th slap your cash down and finish off the process, and walk out with an iPhone, didn't mention anything about putting me onto a contract for a few days, just said they freeze the application process until the 11th. He did warn me that doing this does NOT guarantee an iPhone it's still first come first-served, but it will speed up the process significantly on release day.

Good luck to you! :)

For what it is worth I was also told yesterday (at one of the O2 stores in the Trafford Centre) that an existing Simplicity contract can be upgraded to an iPhone 3G contract without any further credit checks, delays or penalties.

Seems to me that you've saved yourself some time on launch day, and I just can't understand why people are suggesting that you have been 'rinsed'. That's rubbish!

I think the idea that he had been "rinsed" was that he has started paying for a simplicity contract now. The pre-registration process normally would mean you get most of the application process out of the way now, without paying any money up front.

I understand that he is happy to start forking out cash now as he needs to use an O2 SIM immediately to make calls.

So u are on O2 now, but so are a lot of other people as well as existing iphone users who are still in the dark as to how we get our hands on the 3G phone.

It surely cannot be as simple as walking in buying the phone, activating it in store and at home then voila done.

How does an existing iPhone user know that they are not just signing up to a new contract, as well as their original iPhone contract, we need a new SIM as far as i have heard/read.

The admin alone for existing iPhone users will slow things down, never mind pre-registered or O2 upgrades.

It's quite clear on the O2 website that upgrades for exisiting iPhone customers are online only, i.e. you won't be doing it instore. They'll just send you an activated phone with a new sim in it through the post, you plug it into iTunes and finish the registration and away you go.

my thought here is that as the OP now has a sim, and is effectively upgrading, there are 2 things..

you have to give 30 days notice on simplicity, so from now, til, the 29th of July
you can't upgrade in store..

:\

this has been said, and the OP has also said it's not a problem

you can't upgrade in store..
only existing iphone customers cannot upgrade in store, everyone else can

one thing to think about is if you are on half price line rental most companies will not give you the same upgrades as a normal customer becuase you are on half price!

you could find that you may have to pay more for your upgrade than expected!

this was the case when i was at t-mobile

he said the device would be usable within 48 hours
should generally take 10 mins, according to o2 website

however, each person at o2 is saying different things

It depends whether you are transferring a number or not.

If you are transferring an existing O2 number to an iPhone contract, O2 says it will take 24-48 hours for this to do (generally it's less that 24 hours, according to people I know who work for Carphone Warehouse). As soon as the number is transferred, the old contract ends and the iPhone can be used.

If you decided not to transfer, the iPhone will be activated in the usual ten minutes.

Because the OP is moving a number from a Simplicity contract, he was told the correct information from the member of staff.

This 'pre-ordering' for the iPhone isn't anything new anyway. When I worked at o2 last year before finishing my MA degree there was always a 'suspend' button at the bottom of the ordering process. This simply held the order at that point allowing you to pick it up later for the customer.

This could be stopped after the credit check so they wouldn't have to go through this again. We would often do this if someone had to go get the correct ID from home etc (if they didn't have it with them) but wanted to make sure they passed the credit check. We also did it before the launch of the N95 so people could pick it up straight away.

It's always been an option.

The only reason he signed you up to the simplicity deal was to check another mark off his targets - it was a tactic we were told to do if someone was waiting for a new phone.

Very informative post Leemo - thanks for the info.

Edit 3: o2 ARE NOT PRE-ORDERING CONTRACTS FOR IPHONE 3G.

Edit: He also confirmed they were definately opening at 7.02am on July 11th,
and even stated the shopping mall, of which the store is based, will also open early in light of this 'marketing opportunity'.
Edit 2:
Another little tid-bit .. the sim card issued is branded 3G

R-Fly

Old news, no? most SIM cards are 3G, whether in a 3G capable handset or not, the 7.02 time was known a while back, and O2's plans seem more to be in line with a new version of iTunes, which'll do the O2 activation magic, and getting iPhones from Apple stores to require the upcoming new iTunes version. The concept of getting people on simplicity tarif to get them ready for immediate shifting to an iPhone tariff's been mentioned previously. It's a good market ploy - i'm sure people are happy Simplicity tariff exists (Virgin do a similar rolling 1 month contract, as do others I imagine). It'll be interesting to see how many people shift over, after realising ~July 11 what's happening (the penetration of the message that there will be a 3G iPhone will be a lot stronger after the reviews and razzmatazz no doubt).

Just an update on the situation. I re-visited my local o2 store today with the intention to get full confirmation of the option to upgrade this temporary contract (Simplicity) to iPhone 3G on July 11th. The sales rep, who was different to the first sales-person who first served me on Saturday, confirmed that the o2 Simplicity-25 contract was subject to a non-penalty upgrade to iPhone 3G.

When I asked about the 30-days-notice within Simplicity, he simply replied 'This is for courtesy purposes only. O2 require 30-days notice for cancellation or upgrades on Simplicity tarrifs, although an upgrade to an iPhone contract, specifically speaking the iPhone 3G, is not subject to these normal Simplicity terms and conditions.' I asked again, 'So I can come in on the 11th, and upgrade to iPhone 3G from this Simplicity tarrif, without penalty of any sort?' He replied 'We will simply upgrade your contract to the iPhone from your current simplicity tarrif you took out on Saturday - all you will need to do is buy the handset of your choice, whether it be 8GB or 16GB, and have it activated by one of us, here.'

I had the receipt and contract papers in hand, and asked one final time, 'So I bring these papers with me on July 11th, and walk out with an iPhone', He replied 'Yep - we open at 7.02am on the 11th'.

Finally he said 'You'll need to fill out a couple of forms for the new iPhone contract, let us activate it, and you'll be on your way'.

With that I left.

After now being told by my friend at o2, and two people at the same store that this is the case, I am positive this is now the case, and come July 11th, I will be upgrading to iPhone 3G with just the £159 handset cost to swallow.

Bring on July 11th.
