[O2/UK] Update on contract?

If I get the £44 a month package from o2 including the free 8gb iPhone, will I receive an upgrade to the third generation iPhone when it comes out and get to keep the old handset? If so:

- Will it be free?
- Will the older handset be open to use any o2 simcards (pay & go)?
- If not free, how much would the update be?

Sorry if this doesn't make sense; I'm new to the world of contract phones 🙄.
