Unlike newer RPG games from Bethesda, the race you select does matter, I picked Kajiit for sneak/assassin type playstyle. Another good race for archery is the wood elf but I like what the beginning attributes of the Kajiit had.

Once you get near the end of the tutorial, you pick what star you were born under, basically a character buff. I picked the Thief

When you level up in the game, you need to sleep to actually activate the new level and then you pick three attributes to increase. This forces a specialization of your character. So for assassin type characters, you want to boost Agility, and early in the game Endurance is a must, as that's your health. Even if you're not a melee player Strength is a good one to boost because it increases your carry capacity and it also helps increases your health.

Lockpicking mini game can be frustrating, this link has a good explanation on how it works. Basically you need to his the space bar just as the pin finishes the upward motion, but you need to do it when the pin speed is slow, not fast.
