I really can't imagine Apple would create such a PR maelstrom as doing this to their customers. There's certainly an amount of ego that goes with being so successful, but I would hope that their culture wouldn't be undermined so quickly. They have always vied to do the best for their customers.
People really need to keep in mind the China factor. They are a phase 1 country and the demand may have been unprecedented. (it was also 3pm when the store opened in China - so, not like they had to stay up to the wee hours like many in the US).
I really do hope Apple reveals the sales numbers at WWDC. I think they need to, to further stoke the interest of the developer community. The publication of the sales numbers (and possibly a more granular divulge of where the demand came from) may be the "AHA!" moment we're all waiting for.
