Another long shot....
I had the same problem for months that was driving me nuts until I finally realized my idling cel tel was siting close to my computer. I moved it a few feet away and the popping stopped.
Like I said, a long shot.

I've owned maybe upwards of 15 different computers...have never ever seen such a thing.

I have another computer in the same room, running from the same wall outlet with a 600 watt power supply and I have never ever heard any pops like these...and they use the same Sound chipset! (Realtek).

Shame on you Apple.

There are way too many variables here... that's why the store can't replicate it. Just as likely as it is the computer messing up, one of the speaker wires could be underprotected and be affected by radiant emissions from the wall, the computer, the monitor; the list never ends.

Another computer was put in the SAME location that the Mac Pro is now...never in the last 3 years have I heard such a pop. Nothing changed in the environment,

i'd still guess that it was static. Found myself talking about this with some friends at uni this evening (riveting stuff!), and only two of us said that we had experienced it. we all have mbp's but use different speakers

Might be...but how to get rid of it? It's a show stopper for me. I know this is the Mac's fault for sure...

... and you could probably put another mac there, and it would be fine too.

Not sure if I understand your reply?

You're directing a lot of anger towards Apple/Macintosh. Fact is, you're probably right in isolating the computer. THE (singular) computer; another Mac would be as likely as another PC to replicate the problem (well, ok, maybe slightly more likely, but you get the idea).

Had this problem after I took my computer outside to blow the dust out last month. Loud pop from the speakers 2-3 times a day for a couple of days. I pulled the speaker plug from the back of the computer, cleaned the plug, and blew out the port on the computer with a can of air. Not sure if that was an actual fix or if I was just lucky, but it hasn't happened since.

Do you have an iPhone? The iPhone is known to cause intermittent interference to some speakers.

LOL I am not directing anger towards anything Apple related...just "my" Mac. I've singled out that it's the problem, not the surrounding items.

Macs and PC's are not so different nowadays...so it wouldn't matter if it was the fault of a PC, it wouldn't matter. I would blame the PC.

You must've been lucky :D
Anyways, the guys called and they said they fixed it by replacing the roof of the Mac Pro, will see if this is true.

I don't have an iPhone, I have a Tilt, which uses 3G in my area...3G does not have the buzzing noise that GSM has.

My 24" 2.8GHz iMac started popping as soon as I installed 10.5.2. It never did it before, it started immediately afterwards. It is especially noticeable on my system because I have Bose speakers installed, with a subwoofer, and the subwoofer pops dramatically. It happens before ANY sound, and the longer it goes between making sounds, the worse the pop is. For example even the little squirting sound that acknowledges raising or lowering the volume, is preceded by this terrible POP. Let's hope for a quick fix with a quick release of 10.5.3. :apple:

Hello my new imac pops too. Should I risk Apple repairing it or leave it? Thing is the popping thing is pretty common, so I presume they don't have a fix for this anyway. They could fit another sound card and I'd have the same problem.
Also this imac has none of the display problems that afflict some. Don't want a replacement imac either really!

However some people may find this works, A "keep sound chip awake" app.

I have the same issue, hear the "pop" maybe a few times a day. I'm on a new 2008 mac pro. I don't know why everyone keeps saying it has to do with static from other electronics; that seems like the last thing it would be. For me, it is clearly a sound coming from the built in speaker in the desktop case. Very annoying, hope someone finds a fix.

could be something on the same ring main that the mac pro is connected to, my old windows box used to pop all sorts of oddness whenever my central heating kicked in, it was like a mini gun fight on my main board 0.o

I guess you can unplug the internal speaker and that should fix it, I've never had anything to do with my mac pros internal speaker as I always run mine through a firewire interface (motu 828 mkII) and besides I have a power cleaner for my mac pro ( I have to because I run a professional recording studio)

I have the Quad Mac Pro, for about 1 month already. I hear an occasional "pop" from the speakers, which I am guessing are the fault of the sound card. Is it me or the build quality has gone down ever since Apple moved it's production line to China???? The FireWire port on the front seems a bit fragile too?

i had this too, but then i realized that the loud pop wasn't coming from my speakers. i opened my pc and the mobo was all trashed. i read this article which is pretty much exactly what happened to my computer, except it wasn't the video card, it was the mobo: http://variableghz.com/2008/11/pc-er-loud-pop-followed-by-system-failure/ :D

PM me and let me know if it was your speakers or not ;

move the electronics aside, then try again?

Tis unnacceptable for a Mac Pro to have such problems but for those of us who need to suck it up and crack on with real work there are two ways to resolve this yourself:

1. Use the digital output to a DAC (DACs can be bought for as little as $50).
2. Use a USB sound card, a good one is the Behringer UCA202 which has multiple inputs/outputs ($40 suprisingly)
