Hello everyone

My 85-year old dear mum is still rocking a Mac Mini mid 2011 which is running High Sierra. I believe it is the most current system that the machine can handle natively.

Would anyone know if this machine could run a higher version of macOS via OCLP?

I'm asking because of a message I saw on Dorthania about the Intel HD Graphics 3000 (which her machine has) not being Metal-capable.

Thank you in advance
Philip

i wouldn't use OCLP on that Mini unless you are close by your mum and are willing to provide LOTS of tech support in the event there are problems...

If not, think about a replacement...

Thank you for replying. Yes i realise it may be more complex. It's in part an idle thought on my part because the machine works super well for her needs. I was mainly wondering for the future in light of what I had read on about the GPU.

I don't recommend anyone use OCLP unless they are themselves technically able to set it up and maintain it.

When running macOS via OCLP a simple macOS update can screw up the works.

It can run it, yes. I run Sonoma on an HD3000 Mac and it runs surprisingly well.

However, I have to echo the comments on here and would steer you away from it simply because it’s the kind of thing that’s very easy to muck up through relatively normal use. I tried to OCLP my dad’s 2014 mini last year and he managed to break some of the patches within a month, and walking a parent through reapplying system comparability patches isn’t fun!

Check for good deals on a used M1 mini for her, they’re getting surprisingly cheap these days!
