system pref -> accounts -> login options -> enable fast user switching -> view as name or short name

... is how i think he did it
or, he has other users on his mac

You can always reduce the space the image takes up (MB, not resolution).

@OrangeCuse - vegrafik has made a blank iCal icon now to fill in the gap.
