Facebook parent company Meta today announced an upcoming fitness update for the Oculus Quest 2, which will allow fitness data captured during VR workouts to be integrated with the Apple Health app.

Right now, when people exercise with interactive games like Liteboxer, Beat Saber, or Dance Central using the Oculus Quest 2, the data can only be viewed on the Oculus Mobile app on the headset itself, which is not particularly useful for those who like to track their fitness metrics.

Starting in April, fitness data from the Oculus Quest 2 will sync to the Oculus Mobile app on iOS devices or with the Apple Health app. Users will track minutes spent working out and calories burned while wearing the VR headset.
If you have an iOS device, you'll be able to choose to sync your VR fitness progress with the Apple Health app to automatically track your VR workouts on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch without having to manually input information about your exercise. This means all your exercise stats, including your activities both in and out of VR, can be tracked and available in one place.
Syncing Oculus Quest 2 data to either the Oculus Mobile app or the Apple Health app is opt-in, but choosing to connect to the Oculus Mobile app will see Move stats stored on Meta's servers. Meta says that Oculus Move stats will not be used to "inform the ads you see on any Meta services."

Guess I won't sell my Quest 2 after all /s
Forehead heats up enough playing more sedentary games, I can't imagine trying to workout with it strapped to my face.

Beat Saber is a fun game once you u lock it for custom songs.

That said, sold my Oculus once FB forced users to have a FB account and link to the Quest.

Didn't know that's what Move was for. Never launched the app. I usually start an "Other" workout on my Watch when I play something more physical like Beat Saber. There's no point in tracking when I'm sitting down playing PokerstarsVR or VRChat or something similar. I probably won't sync their data to Health though, but the feature is cool for those that don't have any other kind of fitness trackers.

My hope is that they have only write access, verus read and sell, can anyone speak to this?
I need to double check, but I think that is the case. They can add to the data, but I don't believe they can read it. That would be a huge privacy concern if apps could get ALL of your Health data from their end. I think it's just the data the headset collects that will be on Meta's servers.

You'd have to give 100% trust to Facebook.
You can give 100% trust for them to write data to HealthKit, but 0 access to read access. That's controlled by Apple. So you have to trust Apple, which I do because I've worked with HealthKit, and without permission from the user you can't get any health data. Its not even possible to know if the user gave permission or not.

This tells me that you don’t trust Apple enough to protect Apple Health data. If you don’t give permission to any app to read your health data, Apple wouldn’t allow it. I also know that Meta won’t be taking any of your health data. If you have an Oculus and have the Move app, your data is already stored by Meta, but it’s not being sold. This update is just a way for you to get you Move data into Apple Health, like any other piece of health equipment.

Actually you should look for "Fitness Gaming" on your watch. That's how I log my Quest exercise (and I get the heart rate data, which Quest Move doesn't have anyway).
