The hilarious thing is that this thing should be designed with an iPhone/iPad as a minimum specification not some high end PC that no one in a retail environment owns.

Because Oculus isn't thinking short term. They know that specs get better and better quickly. Why design a system that leverages lower tech when they can have a system that will last longer over time?

one day mac users, this can be you.

Lol, I just don't see the appeal

So if Apple comes out with a VR Device that does not need a super-dooper Graphics Card then will OR eat their words? Somehow I doubt it.
VR is and probably will remain a pretty niche market. Is it the next 'big thing'? I don't think so.
Apple will just do their own thing as usual and if they release something it may well blow OR out of the market.

I think this statement is just OR letting everyone know that they are still here. After all, didn't MS just announce their own headset?

Virtual Reality is just another iteration of 3D, and 3D has failed from the red/blue glasses for Creature from the Black Lagoon to the polarized glasses of the 1980s to the 3D televisions that have gone nowhere in the past few years. The fact is that vanishingly few people want to wear the headgear required to immerse themselves in 3D or VR, because it is an order of magnitude more isolating than, say, just wearing headphones for teamspeak or similar chat functionality. Add in the wires and power requirements, and you have a non-starter for 99% of the population.

Produce a holodeck like those on Star Trek: TNG and we can talk. Until then this will remain a niche market.

Steve Jobs knew when to prioritize form factor and when not to. Jobs wisely did not care about making the Mac Pro small and thin because he realized that expandabilty was highly important for a pro machine. Tim Cook is clueless and prioritized form factor and unwisely made the Mac Pro small with very limited expandabilty.

Gamers do. They love building rigs. I don't see this product being widely adopted by casual players, but gamers and competitive players for sure.

Yes, i agree with you... i just don't think gamers and competitive players own macs (as their gaming platform) to begin with. So even if macs had better graphics capabilities, i don't think they would be there.

Can see their point. If someone is desperate to try then they can use bootcamp.

I really wish apple would release a decent gaming system, im dreading my 2009 mac pro breaking.

The bigger showstopper will be the high prices of VR headsets and the lack of content at the moment. VR is nothing like the crappy 3D effect you see in movies. Everyone I know who has tried it has liked it (even those who do not play video games) as it gives an experience that feels quite real. We are still early on so it may take a few years before the tech sees widespread adoption but I believe it eventually will. At least as soon as VR porn becomes common. :D

I mean, he's right. iMacs have crappy overheating laptop dGPUs (or no dGPUs at all), MacBooks (all but the high-end 15" MacBook Pro) only have iGPUs (with the dGPU in the top end 15" MBP being very mid-range) and Mac Pro has a workstation GPU that isn't meant for gaming at all.
