On what basis have you concluded that this is in fact "Apple-designed" as your headline states? There is zero evidence of this. Waste of ink and newsprint imo

I think I know what this is... It’s flat, designed to sit flash against another surface, and the position of the connectors indicate that surface would be flat. I’ll be it’s a wireless charging part that will be housed in a stand of the redesigned iMacs, so you can place your phone on the stand and charge it.

...or it‘s part of the wheel hub for the Apple Car. 😂

There was literally no ink or newsprint used to convey this story 😂

Not trying to pick bones or anything but this is macrumors.com. This is literally a rumor. If it was a website that engages in fact-based journalism it would have been called macfacts.com. Just saying...

unless you miss placing it perfectly on your night stand and wake up to an empty iPhone cuz it never started to charge.
Again, only if you cling to the old notion that charging is a thing that you do overtly, one time, at night. If the phone gets set on a charger at various times during the day / evening as well as at night, it’ll never be empty.

Between magnets and idea of wireless charging likely it’s so you get positive alignment to maximize charging unlike on many Qi chargers where placement can be off. The magnets basically snap the phone on perfectly centered over the charging coil. Would give a more standardized and efficient charge negating some of the Qi negative effects.

Or just someone who happens to have the same commercially available carpet in their office. Or maybe it's an Apple super fan (they are lurking on this site, you know) who converted his basement to look like the Apple campus! No way to know for sure.

Wait, that's brilliant... I'm going to Depot. 😂

That's exciting. I still find that my iPhone doesn't charge overnight on the charging plate because it's off a fraction of a mm. Sometimes it seems to be so minute, but off is off, and dead is dead. Having some way to make sure that the thing is on the pad in the exact spot...

Oh, but my Apple Watch, and the GENIUS Apple Watch Charging Stand, have started fighting each other, resulting in an undercharged watch. Oh, and the constant *PING* *PING* *PING* all night. GRRRR!!!:mad::mad::mad:It's something that has started happening more and more in the past few months. Weird...

*SHRUG* I've got killer plateware, and am tickled when it shows up in movies and tv shows. It's unique enough that it doesn't show up often, so when it does, it's a hoot. Same with the Dansk silverware. It has shown up in a couple scifi movies, which is cool. #Carpet? #ButAnyway

The obsession with wireless charging boggled the mind. Let me know when they can run current to make contactless charging.

I would like to see that charging cable get dropped next. And have the bands separate purchase if you already have bands. This should reduce the waste that would fill a football stadium.
I wouldn’t mind saving money and JUST buying the watch with nothing.

I don’t know if I set it like this or not, but my phone vibrates the moment it starts charging. It helps, whether I plug it in or place it on a wireless charging pad, the little feedback lets me know I did it right. And, for lightning, it lets me know if the charge is low power slow or “30 minutes to 50% full” fast by vibrating a second time.

I've had my iPhone ping when I put it on the pad, meaning it's charging, and have it be near death the next morning. I discovered that the light on the charging pad will light up, and stay lit for a 'long time', and then eventually blink signifying that it is NOT actually charging. So now I have to stand there and watch the pad after I put my iPhone on it, and see if it starts blinking, then nudge it to get the light to stay on. (It seems to be happening more now for some reason)

With the Apple Watch charger stand, it will all of a sudden start pinging during the night. I couldn't figure out what it was trying to tell me because often it would be 100% charged, but it's not 'sticking' to the magnetic puck concave area, slipping apparently during the night. I've reached over and knocked it off the base because it pings several times. I've tried to adjust the angle, and it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference when it wants to keep me awake. *sigh* I don't have enough room to lay the watch on the pad with it not buckled. First world problems...

I’ve got Anker charging stands, that hold the phone at roughly a 60° angle. They’re a touch narrower than my iPhone 8. If I set it on the stand and in the process slightly wrap my fingers around to the back of the phone to confirm it’s centered (this has become muscle memory), I’m basically guaranteed that the phone is perfectly aligned with the coils. I’ve never had a problem with this. The mats offer the illusion of more freedom, but at the cost of constant vigilance.

This also makes notifications instantly readable if I glance over when there’s an alert sound. Versus having to pick up the phone, or hover my head over the phone, like are necessary with a mat. I can also quite literally put it back on the stand with my eyes closed, using only finger feedback (as described) to ensure it’s in the right place.

And with the phone essentially sliding down an inclined plane against a grippy rubbery pad on the base (such that gravity is working to keep it in that exact position), it’s highly unlikely to get knocked out of place by minor motions (like, say, bumping the nightstand).

Ah, may be failing :(

1. Put metal contacts on back of pop socket.
2. Film video calling it an Apple Prototype.
3. ?????????
4. Profit.

Ya my inclination was to think how do we even know this is from Apple much less a wireless charger? It could literally be anything.
