Hello-

I just updated my early 2009 Mac Pro Xeon 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon to Yosemite (from 10.7.5) and am now (sometimes) getting a weird code appearing on my screen after startup.

Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here is a portion of the code (it's too long to post the whole thing) and attached is a screen grab of the box that it appears in:

Here is the screen grab. Only the beginning of the code is viewable.

Thanks!

Does this happen right at startup? Try holding the shift key at startup to boot to safe mode. That bypasses any login or startup items that may be causing this.

If a safe mode boot stops it, restart in regular mode then download and run the app Etrecheck. That will create an anonymized report showing all launch items so we can maybe help you figure out which one is causing this.

Thanks Weaselboy!

When I boot up in safe mode I do note get the weird code.

Also, I should have added that the weird code appears in a TextEdit window.

I ran Etrecheck and am including the report below.

Thanks again!!

EtreCheck version: 2.9.4 (254)

Report generated 2016-02-18 16:22:51

Download EtreCheck from http://etrecheck.com

Performance: Good

108791f7d3cdb95d54e679ca696a9b31fbf71447 TextEdit Document Hidden (~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/4900743c0163acf0209114711b950a6cc6be9f6d/108791f7d3cdb95d54e679ca696a9b31fbf71447)

You have a lot of third party launch and startup items, but the one that jumps out at me it this one that is a user login item since it looks like a text edit document. Open System Prefs and in Users & Groups under Login Items do you see anything there that looks like it might be launching this?

If it is not clear which item is it, maybe you can use that User Login Items: list from the Etrecheck report to ID it by process of elimination.

The fact that a safe mode boot stops it though, is definitive proof it is a login or launch/startup items of some sort.

That ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ folder is where iTunes puts local iOS device backups. I can't imagine how something from that folder go in this login items list.

When the document is open on your screen in TextEdit, pull down the File Menu to "move to" and move it to the desktop. Close the Text Edit Window. Type Command-Q to quit Text Edit.

Reboot and see if you still have the problem. As long as nothing seems to go astray, you can then trash the file from the desktop and empty the trash.

Thank you Weaselboy & JohnDS!

I think that it is the document that you both mention. When I moved that file to the desktop and then rebooted my Mac the weird code did NOT appear on the screen. However, when I then rebooted a 2nd (and 3rd time) the code did appear -- even with the textedit document on the desktop (and then when I tried putting it in the trash).

Thoughts?

As always, thank you!

Thanks for the info! Should I just delete them?
The Shockwave plugin is almost never used anymore so that is most likely safe to delete.
Getting rid of Java is a bit more complex since it's not just a browser plugin. There's a possibility that something else on your computer is using it, but you shouldn't be using Java in the browser anymore, in most cases.
You can follow instructions here to uninstall Java, and then if you find you need it later on, just download Java 8 from java.com and reinstall.
As was mentioned above, you have a LOT of third party things loading at startup and at login; it's worthwhile to do an audit to see if you still need all of them.

OK. forgive the stupid question, but where do I find those plugins?
If you look in the Etrecheck report is shows where they are.

They will be in one of these folders. The ~ is your personal users folder.

~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems

The Internet plugins will be in this folder.

/Library/Internet Plug-ins

We had a mac mini that went for repair to apple. When it came back it had this full extended boot thing on the go too. Previously it only had the white apple screen. It must be a diagnostic mode enabled somehow.

@vexorg, I suspect you had a different situation. The OP had a text file opening no boot up. It sounds like the Apple Tech left your Mac set to startup in Verbose mode, which is something different.
