When viewing the Document folder in list view, folders don't have the drop down symbol next to them. I can view other folders (even ones inside the Document folder), but the primary folders in Documents don't show it. Is this by design, or does anyone know of a fix?

Issue turned out to be a “group by name” option in finder. No clue what that option is for, but disabled it and now I can expand all folders.

In Sierra (and I think since Lion), if you choose anything other than "None" for "Arrange By:" you will not see the folder expansion triangles. There are explanations out there on the interwebs but I didn't see one that included "Why?".

Tested a bit further. You can group by "kind" which'll line up images, videos, pdfs etc. Suppose the idea is that if you had folders grouped and you tried to expand one, it'd throw off the grouping of those various types of files if you also had images/vidoes/pdfs within an expanded folder.
