I have always lusted after a quad G5. Always. I wish I had one and still do to this day, however I have the two best replacements: a Dual Core 2.0GHz and my most recent acquisition.

Every now and again I visit this recycler I meet off of craigslist a few months back and today I decided to make the trip once again. I was hoping to find a 2.3GHz from early-2005 as they always have 10-20 G5s laying around. Sadly, they didn't have any. I ended up walking away with two PPC machines (1.5GHz PBG4 15" and G5) and a hard drive (for my Mac Pro).

The G5 seemed like an oddball. It was a 2.5 so I knew it had to have a LCS, but the heat sink seemed different from the Delphi radiator found in most G5s. The factory plastic plug that holds the plate in place was still there so I knew it was never tampered with so all the way I kept trying to figure out what it could be. I never even in my wildest dreams thought that it might end up being a Panasonic LCS.

So far I see no leaks, however there is some salt water-like corrosion on some of the metal leading me to believe that this machine was used by the beach. The top CPU is being problematic with the thermal calibration so I need to deal with that tomorrow. Still, after 5-8 G5s, I have never figured out what "TAFFs" are. Temps are staying fairly low at idle: 120-130F for CPU0 120-125F for CPU1 but they max out at 181F (top) and 170F (bottom).

The Panasonic definitely looks a lot different then the Delphi!

More pics please ! Top view of LCS and when it is mounted on logic board.

I thought that Panasonic LCSs could only be found on Dual 2.7 G5s.

:D

So did I, it seems we were wrong! I'll try and get pictures next chance I get. :)

Now I was wondering if someone could help me. I have found nothing on the Panasonic system and replacing the coolant inside. I know it is not supposed to leak, however the fans keep cycling up and down and I can hear that there is air in the system. Has anyone torn one of these systems apart or at least replaced the coolant in it? If so, could you please share how you did it?

The power supply died last night, but I am sure glad I had one working power supply on hand for these G5s! While I was in there I saw no corrosion from a leaky system, however the pad that was there to absorb any leak crumbled away and all I was left with was a plastic sheet.

Found one for myself, finally :D

very nice find :)

the Panasonic LCS is a much rarer but much more reliable unit then the Delphi's from what I have seen :)

My 2.7Ghz G5 touch wood has a Panasonic LCS as well and it runs rock solid. it was certantly a surprise to me when I opened mine up to see it running panasonic.

thats a nice bundle of PCI cards too :)
