It's the new Tsunami Box.

Apple engineers worked tirelessly to create this new, innovative packaging. It's amazing design is 20% lighter then the previous generation's box, along with 60% less volume. The edges of the new box are a mere 2 mm thin, yet have a durability increase of nearly 75% over prior versions.

During assembly, precision laser saws cut each edge of the proprietary iCardboard with a new technique known as package vectoring. Then, 45 megapixel cameras photograph each edge of the box to determine the best fit for one of 256 possible styrofoam shells. Each shell is environmentally friendly and free of harmful toxins like mercury, arsenic, BFRs, and PVC. The new Tsunami Box meets the most stringent requirements set by the EPA, giving it an Energy Star Infinity qualification.

Jonathan Ive had this to say regarding the new Tsunami Box. "When you build a box this good, you have to forget everything you know about boxes. We designed the Tsunami Box from the ground up, developing innovative assembly processes that were once thought to be impossible. It's something we're really excited about."

"Alumineeeeum."

Well, I'm just saying ...

That I could put together a Hackintosh with a much cooler box than that! And probably for a lot less money! Take that Apple!

You'd have to have a shim to put on the bottom though, to start it out level.

that's a fine looking rhombus, you've assembled ...:D

I really hope that no one is really complaining about the shape of a packing box?

I'm disappointed that Apple sacrificed packaging safety for the iMac for a thinner box ...

That is simply NOT worth the tradeoff .. :D

I don't really care about the box. I only want to see it when I bring it home, and then again in 2017 when I sell it. The rest of the time it will live in my loft unless it needs to go back for repair.

I just loooove ambient occlusion ! :p

I do too. It's supposed to be a faster alternative to global illumination, but I use both most of the time (when I can stand to wait forever with my old laptop) I think it looks better that way.

It may also be designed to help the person who is caring the box to the car deal with the bulkiness of the box. By making the box thinner at the top it's easier for people with short hands/arms to carry it.

Plus I like the box.

More importantly however, the real question is, how well will these boxes stack on top of each other on pallets?

Oh, man! You guys are just too funny sometimes! lol

Clearly this is way cooler than a plain box of yesteryear. :D

My last reply was meant to be a joke but I am very impressed by the effort everyone has taken into getting the new box to stack up next to each other.

In the words of the immortal Jeff Spicoli, "Awesome! Totally awesome!"

I think you're right about the flat back thing. I didn't notice that. But that actually solves my initial problem because you can just put them in groups of twos, flat sides facing one another and have them fit together.

I counter with a 3D render, now with 100% more ambient occlusion.

You'd have to have a shim to put on the bottom though, to start it out level.

That's only if both faces are angled. The picture on Apple's site makes the back look flat. Therefore:

Revolutionary.

At least it helps the environment!

Actually, I beg to differ. In the effort of shaving off cardboard from the sides of the box, don't they have to use the same amount of cardboard along the long/diagonal side in order to maintain straight/parallel top and bottom sides?

Now THAT is funny!

LOL.
You really are unbelievable guys :D, I missed Jonathan Ive's video talking about the new iMac, but you made it up for me.

It's ridiculous to be upset over a shape of a box. I like it and couldn't care less how easy they stack on a platte. That's Apple's ****ing problem.

You may jest, but it is innovations like this that make Apple stand out from the crowd. There is a whole science about packaging - the new box shape actually increases the structural rigidity and integrity of the item, as well as saving ~3% on shipping. That may not sound like much, but 3% on 4-5 million units each year must be quite a big dollar number... worth doing if you can.

The stand / base is the reason for the box shape. If Jonathan Ive could have made this smaller and still maintained the balance and stability if the iMac, I'm sure that he would.

Domino's Pizza saved $ millions when they went to an octabox by cutting the corners off.

Nice :D

makes sense, skinny screen, long stand /| save on environment resources which is what apple is all about. + the packaging looks cool

edit: what's with all this sarcasm. it is a freakin box.. god people will find anything to cry over when it comes to Apple. Why the emphasis on aluminium? You realise aluminum is in the minority when you look at the entire globe right?

If you can't stand Apple making things thinner and like to mock them for flaunting their design don't come to an Apple related website nor buy their products. It seems like you're buying your own mockery when you say these things.

That box is so great, I think I'll throw away the iMac inside it and just put the box on my desk.

Big boss would be proud!

The odd shape might make it easier for some to get it into their cars, those 27 systems are BIGGGGGGG
