i don't know if this is in any other country, but in oz, we have a foxtel channel called boomerang which is run by the cartoon network guys, but it is only classic cartoons like looney toons, penelope pitstop and heaps of other good classics

It makes me sad as wellm because they were still around when I was a kid. Granted, I am only 20 now, I even realize how the quality of Saturday morning cartoons has diminished. I miss the old school cartoons. We should start a petition. Maybe some network out there would get the idea.

Also, had you thought about licensing for the cartoons? I can't imagine it is very cheap...

Seriously. I don't know if it's because I'm older or what, but with a few exceptions, I'm astonished at the craptacular quality of children's TV programing these days. Is it because overprotective parents demand sterile kids shows for fear that their kids will try and drop an anvil on Road Runner? Is it because the show creators try to make every show educational?

I think you may be getting close to the truth of the matter.

Social engineer hand-wringers have probably had their fingers in the pie.

And yet more and more guns appear on the street??

I just think that in most cases, people always think the cartoons from THEIR era were the best. Sure, I honestly don't believe the cartoons today are as cool as they were when I was young, but I don't think the drop in quality is as severe as people are making it out to be.

Does South Park count as a cartoon? I don't watch it often (ie: almost never), but that is pretty much the best cartoon of all time.

Somehow this whole thing eluded me but I was channel surfing yesterday and caught the cartoon network playing "Transformers"

But not the 80s American pseudo Anime version...not even the 90s CGI abortion...but a completely NEW Transformers show in the style of the 90s Batman cartoon...

And man, thats a step DOWN in quality let me tell you. Transformers from the 1980s detailed and hardly animated glory to this fluid blobs of color and shapes. Ew.

Born in 1993 and I basically "grew up" with a lot of what's been said here. Except for Transformers, Thundercats, and Smurfs since that was a little older than what I seen. However, by the time I turned to my teens (basically the age of 10) shows like Dexter's Lab, Catdog, Doug, and other awesome shows started to disappear like mad.

Rocket Power was awesome too but sad that they decide to remove those for crap. Fairy Odd Parents weren't that bad but it's only like one in a sea of crap >.<

Btw, the new Transformers look HORRIBLE.

Some of the best lines ever!

Doesn't get any better. It's genius because it's timeless. Looney Tunes will be just as relevant in fifty years as it was when it first came out. Any of these sound familiar?

What you should look out for before buying those DVD's is if they are censored. I don't know if this is practiced with the DVD's but it sure is practiced on television.

Just Google
Censored Disney
Censored Cartoon Shorts
Censored Eleven

Many of these cartoons are censored by broadcasters and studios for being too violent, sexist, racist and generally offensive. But honestly is it right to censor the past? I think it is not. Rather they are robbing children today of hilarious classics to avoid some complaints. People who do not approve can change the channel.

To find some of the funniest cartoons made you will probably have to do some hunting. Since basically any Looney Toon, Merry Melody, A.A.P., Disney Short and other Studios cartoon shorts from the 1930's, 40's or 50's are probably considered too offensive to be allowed on the market untouched. I came across a sight that offers 165 banned and censored cartoons. I do not know how legitimate they are but here is a link.

Looney Tunes, Ducktales, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Thundercats and HeMan... awesome.

I totally agree with you. While I think that the 90's shows were a lot better and "realer," I've just sort of glance and some shows on Disney and Nick for kids and preteens and they're horrible. They're totally unimaginative and depict horribly vapid people. It's a shame, because back when I was young, shows like "All That" and "Pete and Pete" were on the air.

That's the crazy thing. See, to most people here who are talking about the "good" cartoons, the ones you mentioned SUUUUCK. They're not the "good" ones we're talking about, although I understand that you think those cartoons were a part of "the good old days".

I haven't even heard of the cartoons you mentioned.

The only recent 'kids' show that was any good was Invader Zim and that was pulled off for being too subversive.

How about Mysterious Cities of Gold? You'd never see that on kids TV nowadays.

I saw that. I'd have to see what that'd cost me, since on my cable system it would involve jumping up not one, but two tiers.

OTOH, I was at the grocery store yesterday, and to what do my wondering eyes appear, no not a sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, but a DVD, the "Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection". $14.95 for 29 varied cartoons (Bugs, Tweety, Road Runner, Sam & Ralph, et. al.). So I grabbed it. Good times.

Whoa, so many of my favourite cartoons mentioned here, real flashbacks!

My absolute favourite though are Fred Quimby era Tom and Jerry cartoons, they were the greatest.

Managed to find a box set on amazon, i think some are censored  but there still awesome, going to rip a few to the iPhone

edit: as per comment below, may not suit young'uns, don't sue me please!

I also love these old cartoons, but if they're for your 3 year old granddaughter, then soz no way.

I have a 3 year old daughter, and I grabbed some old school Tom and Jerry for her to watch. she started acting out the behaviour from these cartoons. Hitting people with various things, pinching, claiming 'it doesn't hurt them', running around smashing things etc.

Banned tom and jerry, and her behaviour improved.

Now, many months later, she still remembers them and begs me to bring them back.

For 3 year olds, I suggest Pingu, Pocoyo, anything from Pixar or Dreamworks.

For yourself, if you really wanna see old cartoons, I suggest *cough* Bittorrent *cough* Piratebay *cough*.

The 1920/1930s B+W cartoons have the best drawing styles I ever saw - Popeye, Felix the Cat etc. In a sensible world, they'd be out of copyright now and free to all.

I'm not suggesting censoring cartoons for adults, but I do suggest that it is unwise to consider ultra-violent cartoons as suitable for infants.

It's the same as some japanese Manga/ Anime, even if it has high quality storylines, lovely art, and you yourself love it, it's still maybe not appropriate for infants.

I dunno, I personally liked them but the fact is that cartoons continue to get WORSE AND WORSE. I seen some of the old cartoons (can barely remember) but Cartoon Network continues to replace and replace cartoons with new ones for some reason.

Looney Toons turned into that baby Looney Toons on WBKids, Dexter's/Johnny Bravo/Scooby Doo/etc that stuff was replaced with things like Foster's Home, Fairy Odd Parents, etc. etc. I stopped watching TV since after cartoons came shows like Drake and Josh and those can only be entertaining for so long.

But I completely understand you there, my cartoons weren't the best but it just worse and worse ehy? Now being in Korea at the moment, current American cartoons seem to blow this stuff out of the water o_O

It should be mentioned that a lot of the old cartoons like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry were not necessarily even intended for kids at all. They ran as shorts before actual grown-up movies, along with MovieTone News and the like. They certainly weren't encouraging six year olds to buy war bonds.
