Can you use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy contents of one ps3 hdd to a new hdd drive?

I have a 120GB in my sons slim PS3 and we want to put in a 500GB or 320GB

Also is there a way to copy my BluRay movies to the internal HDD? to use as a dedicate BR player

Sure, just do a sector copy and you should be fine. You can also do this with Disk Utility. Just create an image of the old drive and restore it to the new one. If CCC gives you any problems, use Disk Utility.

But, what I'd do is use the command line's option, dd, to do it. dd is tougher to since you control it through the terminal, but its also a fool proof way to copy files. I'm a huge fan since it will copy absolutely anything. It runs on the Mac OS X and also all linux distros. I recently cloned my sister in law's laptop drive to a new one and it was a piece of cake, if you like the CLI.

I will give CCC a shot if that doesn't work I will use the command line tool you mentioned, however I suspect CCC will work but we will see.

For blu ray rips, I believe the PS3 has difficulty playing ripped blu-ray movies that are on the internal HDD because the newer blu rays have a weird copy-protection that will prevent the system from playing the file. I haven't personally tried this, however, and am only going off things I've read in the handbrake forums, so if someone knows this isn't true, go ahead and point it out :)

Plus, the PS3 can't handle video files that are over 4GB in size (FAT limitation), so you'd have to split the movie into separate files. Bear in mind that you will also have to use a PS3 friendly extension, since MKV (a common container for blu ray rips) is not supported on the system.

doesn't work with CCC

seems like ps3 drives are formatted with a proprietary filesystem that neither osx or windows can read... the HD shows up as unformatted when attached to the mac w/ sled, thus doesn't show up in CCC, and DD says permission denied after unmounting both volumes...

UNTIL I REMEMBERED TO ENABLE SUDO...

copying now. we'll see what happens.

works!!!

all my data is there and the ps3 is showing 465 GB free space.

good looks on the DD tip, because i probably would've tried ditto, which is HFS+ specific.
