Off with their heads - contact photos in IOS 8

I'm noticing a weird issue with contact photos in this IOS. If I edit a contact and select a photo, scaling and positioning it, then clicking done, it looks fine. But if I exit from that contact and then go back in, or if I double click to see recent contacts, the image is zoomed in more, effectively cutting off a head or at least part of the head. Any tips?
 
I had exactly the same issue ever since Apple made them circular.
Have just been through them al again to se what happens this time
