Does anyone else have the problem with Excel where it freezes your entire machine? Usually this happens when it maximized, but it is a consistent and annoying problem since I work in Excel ALOT. The last update didn't seem to fix the problem, either.

I've used Monolingual in the past, so for the third time was forced to reinstall Office from scratch. Finally 12.1.1 update could be installed successfully, but now all programs still show 12.1.0 in their About boxes. Is it OK?

Somewhere within the Office 2008 12.1.1 Update package is an item named 'updatables' which shows that multi-language versions of Microsoft Office Setup Assistant are sought, in particular the Plugins/SLT.bundle inside it. This bundle was introduced in the SP1 Update (12.1.0) and is not found in the original MSO2008 install.

Opening up the Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) package, and looking inside Packages for Office2008_en_core_12.1.0.combo.pkg, I opened this one up with Pacifist to look for the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant updater/installer. Inside, we find the SLT.bundle in its multi-language state. When this is extracted with Pacifist onto the hard-drive somewhere (desktop will do), it can then replace the one embedded in your existing Office 2008 SP1 installation. (Like many, I had also removed all language localizations and, in so doing, changed the SLT.bundle inside Microsoft Office Setup Assistant)

After doing the above, and after a couple of goes (no Safe-boot or logging-out required), the Office 2008 12.1.1 Update went fine, and the 12.1.1 apps work.

What do I do if I don't have the 12.1.0 installer package?

thanks

I used to have this problem too. I believe this was tracked down to an Apple issue with the video drivers and apparently isolated to systems with the separate graphics card. Since updating to 10.5.3 the issue appears to be resolved.

Hope that helps!

I just installed the 12.1.1. update and the update itself said everything worked out fine.

Now, when I try open any office application, the Office setup assistant pops up, asks if I want to join their user feedback program. Regardless of what I answer, the setup assistant continues to next page, which ask me to either registrate (again!) or get further info.

Going to the registration page doesn't help, because the site can't find the next page after putting in all the details. Tried several times.

Completing the setup assistant opens the Office Update, which then searches, and concludes that there are no further updates. It then quits - back to square one, no office program will open.

Thanks to M$ for stealing half of my working day.

- I'm running Danish language version of Mac Office 2008 Home edition on Macbook with Leopard. Have tried rebooting several times. Don't have time machine running.

Any ideas?

Your installation appears to be illegal (product key) according to Microsoft. Incase you have a valid product key, clicking below will solve your problem but if it is an illegal key then it appears to be the end of the road with Office 2008 free.

Fix here

Tried to install but got this: "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." I had trouble with the 12.1.0 update so i reverted back to the original disc and didn't update because none of the apps would work after install. Surely I don't have to install the 1.0 update first do I??

I can't even install (Dutch office 2008) the 12.1.0... most probably because I was stupid enough to update to 12.0.1 (ow yeah, what was I thinking?!?!).
So according to other resources the only way is to DOWNGRADE to 12.0.0 and install 12.1.0 and then 12.1.1... *cough*.

Just updated

Just updated and have already noticed huge improvements with Office working with spaces and expose. Also I was having glitches with the toolbox that now seem fixed. I wish Office 08 worked like this when it was first released!
Edit: still glitch with toolbox when using spaces

I still can't get this to work on my 12"G4... after installing 12.1.0 AND 12.1.1 it still won't let me get past autoupdate and feedback program... GRR help please

Office SP! update

Is there still no solution to applying SP! to Office 2008 to MAC? I've gone thru all that's suggested here, to no avail. Last try: removed Office, searched for anything resembling an Office file and deleted it, emptied trash, rebooted and freshly installed Office, then attempted freshly-downloaded SP! update. Registration is requested of me over and over, never allowing me to use Word or any other app in the suite. Now I must, again, strip out Office and reinstall it. I've done this twice, with some Apple HQ support, and still am failing. Frustration is too inadequate a word.

snorkeller1, thanks for your tips. Copying the slt.bundle from the official SP1 and used it to replace the current one does the trick perfectly. Succeeded on the first trial!

Thanks again.

OK, I hope this helps those having problems with the install. Naturally, being from Microsoft, it's not as simple as Dragging the app to the applications folder, but I've come to expect less from Microsoft.

  1. Tried to install 12.1.1 but got the same message, saying it couldn't be installed because an installed version couldn't be found.
  2. Drag Microsoft Office folder from Applications to Trash.
  3. Drag "/username/documents/microsoft user data/office 2008 identities" folder to Trash.
  4. Restart computer
  5. Install Microsoft Office, but do NOT run Update.
  6. Restart computer
  7. Launch Word, Excel or Powerpoint (NOT Entourage)
  8. Click Help > Check for Updates
  9. Install Update 12.0.1 (during install, you will be prompted to close Word)
  10. Restart computer
  11. Launch Word, Excel or Powerpoint (NOT Entourage)
  12. Click Help > Check for Updates
  13. Install Update 12.1.1 (during install, you will be prompted to close Word)
  14. Restart Computer
  15. Done.

The WYSIWYG edit really helped my load times, its comparable to the load time of my Office XP version on my PC. I haven't run into any problems stemming from the disabling, yet.

Unfortunately I got the 12.1.1 update to go fine, but it was because I did an entire new install of OSX as well as Office 08 on a new HDD today. So I'm sorry I can't add any input on that front.
