Office 2008 apps - long time to open!

I have a 3 year old iMac G5 running Tiger and Office 2004, and that is much faster then running Office 2008 on my Air with Leopard... All the apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) seem to be very slow in loading.
What gives?

I see the same slow opening issue on my work MBP running Tiger. I'd go back to Office 2004, but we use Exchange at work and Entourage 2008 is at least slightly better at working with Exchange calendar than 2004 was. I'm staying with NeoOffice on my home Mini for OpenXML file format compatibility.

It's because Office 08 is a piece of s***. I've never been so frustrated with an app before., and I'm very familiar with the programs! By trying to make 08 different from 07, they ended up making a handicapped app that is a pain in the ass to use.

I just loaded up Excel 2008 and it was so bad it was nearly amusing! The Beach ball was there on and off as well 🙄

On a 2Ghz Core Duo MacBook with 2GB RAM...

There's no reason why you can't have Word/Excel/PPT 2004 and Entourage 2008 on the same Mac. I have Office 2004 and 2008 on my Mac at work.

It does take some effort to set the older versions as the default for opening new documents, if that's what you want to do, though. "Always open with" doesn't cut it.

The long load time is actually a feature. Microsoft cunningly designed that in to give you time to ponder what wonderful documents you might create prior to actually having the ability to create them.

Me? I use that time to ponder why I'm using Office '08 instead of iWork '08...

I have just tried Office 2008 for a couple of days. I am utterly amazed by how bad it is. I am forced to use 2004 a fair bit and will have to stick with it.

I noticed this right off the bat - I thought 2008 would launch faster than 2004 in Rosetta but it doesn't. Secondly its still slow. It makes no sense.

Word 2008 also keeps putting in line breaks it refuses to delete in all my documents.

Even on my Quad 2.66GHz Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM and a 10,000 RPM boot drive, Office 2008 is slow as a (dead) dog. I only use it when absolutely necessary (i.e., someone sends me a Word document with complex formatting or when I'm forced to use Powerpoint instead of Keynote)
