I just installed Office '08 for Mac on my new MBP, along with all the updates available.

Now, when I try to launch 'Word', this is what happens:

- Icon bounces on the dock until it's loaded
- Microsoft Office 2008 configuration assistent starts
- Word icon disappears
- The configuration assistent asks me if I want to participate in some program, I click no.
- I click finish.
- The updater starts ... no updates to install, click Finish.
- I launch Word ...
- and then this process repeats itself all over ...

It's driving me crazy.
Does anyone know what the hell is going on?

I have no idea. Maybe if you participate in that program? I know this shouldn't happen but who knows...

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

mine did that too. I couldn't get it to work for the life of me and had to downgrade back to 1.0...

What frustrates me most, is that I just try to install a 'pirated' copy on the family iMac and that worked. (not actually using that, just to see if the software was the problem or if my Mac was)
The legitimate version I bought doesn't.

Does Microsoft want me to steal their stuff?

Maybe you already have as this issue is pretty common with invalid serials.... Lol you even admit to installing a pirated copy. I'm willing to bet you are using a pirated copy as why would you install it (a pirated copy) on your families imac when you HAVE THE RETAIL DISC right there.....

http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/05/office_2008_sp1_install_causes_setup_assistant_to_loop.html

After applying the Office 2008 for Mac SP1 Updater, some uses are experiencing a problem where the Setup Assistant starts up every time they try to launch any Office application.

This situation is a result of when the Office Setup Assistant detects that an invalid Product Key was used to install Office 2008. David Pelton, Microsoft MacBU core lead test has outlined below how to fix the problem and requests users to work with him to help chase down the issue to keep it from happening in the future.
