The only software that can make my MBP go slow (and I mean really SLOW) is Word 11.

But it seems that it is related to opening files in older versions of Word.

When opening a document (be it .doc or .docx) Word uses background pagination, noticeable by the increasing number of pages in the status bar at the bottom of the page. This takes very long in my opinion.

So I tested jumping to a page I knew existed (page 280) right after opening the document, even though word was still at page 40 or something with its pagination process. A window pops up showing "Paginating document..." where it went through the whole document WAY faster and jumps to the correct page.

The result being that the background pagination was completed much faster than if I had not jumped to the last page.

How can I force Word to paginate everything like this when I open the document, and not only when I jump to the last page?

Thanks!

i have ms office 2011 in my mac 13 inch i5 2011, it opens in a second or two, 320gb harddrive, 4 gb ram, it opens up faster than final cut logic or AE, maybe theres an issue with software compatibility? or your exagerating and its taking like 2 secs which your not happy with?

Word 2011

Word 2011 seemed to run fine on snow leopard. After a fresh install of lion and new install of office 2011 Word has slowed dramatically on two iMacs. the biggest problem is on a smaller white macbook where (i assume due to its lesser specs, though 4gb ram) the program crawls. constant beach ball.

every time you click on something be prepared to wait 30 secs before you get the pointer back from the beach ball.

i am really surprised i cannot find many users reporting this on the net as it has occurred on all three macs in my office. latest versions of all concerned software.

anyone got any thoughts. i have tried some suggestions out regarding disabling certain autosave features and running repair permissions. As Office and Lion have been out a little while i assume MS are not rushing forward with any fixes.

Yes, I'm rocking the 7200rpm drive. I realize an SSD would be great for MSOffice, but as I like to store many video files on my machine (I'm using 80% of the 500GB drive), it's financially unfeasible to buy a 512GB SSD.

We'll see where SSD prices are in another year or two.

If you want to install SSD and have a lot of stuff in HDD, get a data doubler from OWC... big solution for me...

Excel 2011 slowness

I ran the following VBA script from the following computers:

Sub TimeTest()
Dim x As Long
Dim StartTime As Single
Dim i As Long
x = 0
StartTime = Timer
For i = 1 To 100000000
If Rnd <= 0.05 Then x = x + 1 Else x = x - 1
Next i
MsgBox Timer - StartTime & " seconds"
End Sub

It times how long it takes to loop through a random calculation 100 million times

MacBook Pro 2.7 GHz Intel i7, Mem 4 GB DDR 3, OSX Lion
Averaged 16.2 seconds

Toshiba Satelite 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mem 3GB, Windows 7
Average 10.5 seconds

I'm no techy, but it looks like excel runs 35% faster on 25% less machine.

I'm new to the mac and I'm really loving it for media, and anything else not work related. Unfortunately its version of excel doesn't hold a candle to windows. It's navigation and shortcuts are so different that I'd recommend purchasing numbers instead.

Not surprising. Microsoft has a vested interest in making sure the windows version runs faster, has more features and is generally a more robust application. They sell more copies of offices on windows, plus they sell MS Windows.

I've gotten used to the mac version. Only thing I can't deal with is the VBA editor, which luckily I couldn't care less about when I'm not at work!

Like others I can report that Office 2011 runs great on my mid 2011 MBA.

Office 2011 installs some duplicate fonts that are older than the ones installed by Apple. You can find these in the Library/Fonts/Microsoft folder

• Andale Mono
• Arial Black
• Arial Narrow
• Arial Rounded Bold
• Comic Sans MS
• Georgia
• Impact
• Tahoma
• Trebuchet MS

After you delete these, you need to nuke font caches. Font Nuke is great for this. Additional help: Font Management

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

Open each Office app and let it build it's font list. Quit and restart a couple of times. You should see a speed up after the first launch.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

If the problem is in your User's folder....

Remove these files:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Track down all instances of pre-2011 Normal template on your computer, and drag them to your desktop.

  • Office X: The Normal file is located in the "Templates" folder in your "Microsoft Office" folder.
  • Office Word 2004 moves the Normal Template to live in the Microsoft User Data folder by default.

3) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have moved it, it should be in

~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

4) Drag the entire Microsoft folder to Desktop from User/Library/Preferences/

5) Now re-start Word 2011 and it should be OK.
