I signed out and now it defaults to the Mac SSD.

Excellent , thanks for a quick reply , i'll try that this morning when i talk later to install a new printer on the machine

problem i have now is that the upgrade to sierra a couple of weeks ago , has put documents and desktop across to the icloud drive !!!!! !

so need to try and sort that out first

Here is a link with information about reverting from storing documents and desktop in iCloud:

thanks I had read that
but i do not want the documents on the desktop
and currently under home
there is NOlonger a documents or desktop folder

switching off the icloud option - not sure if that will recreate those folders or if i have to create them

There is a document and desktop folder in Sierra.
I do save all files to onedrive.
If it is not there, you can just create them.

Thanks for all the help

office now points to documents correctly , having removed the icloud drive

the mac automatically added the desktop and documents folder back onto the Mac - BUT they were empty and so i had to copy all the files back into documents to recover completely

cheers
we can now mark solved
