Selling off Xbox? The only profitable and loved part of your company?

Wow, just saw off your legs why don't you MS

Xbox is not profitable. They lose 2 billion annually on it. It is important though if they want it to be part of the consumer market moving forward.

Fully fledged office suite with ability to send files to and from Dropbox, good reader and email for $20 and I'm sold.

While many of us have lots of respect for both Nokia's phones and Windows Phone operating system, the fact is, they own very small fraction of the overall market.

Although the point is arguable, I think had Nokia went with Android platform, it would've been much more successful than it is now. Now, I personally prefer Windows Phone over Android, but the fact is, Windows Phone is not what larger market wants.

I was referring to long-term prospects. In the long-term, being the flagship WP hardware was probably a smart move. Although the marketshare is small now, it has nearly doubled from last year, and continues to grow faster than any other mobile OS - it's not just snapping up new smartphone customers either. While I agree it's still relatively small, it's got almost as much marketshare as MacOS does of the PC world. Remember all those years people said MacOS was insignificant? Welp, we knew better, and I think we still do.

Your check is in the mail.

God, I WISH I got paid for this... :D

And that division is also propped up by all the smartphone patents.

Xbox is still worth keeping if they want to keep the "one microsoft" strategy of multiple connected devices. If they spun off Xbox it would be a pretty significant white flag in the consumer space.

The point of my comment was simply that it's indeed NOT profitable. Being propped up by Android patents is not a good sign.

I believe that Office is the only thing keeping MS afloat these days :D

I would suggest they split into at least 3x:
- Windows
- Office
- XBox

There are too many limitations in Windows because Microsoft wants you to buy their Office suite, like a dictionary and decent email client.

I agree. Split it into three companies. The only company that would make lots of money long term would be the Office division (which would include Project, Visio, Outlook, etc., as well as Word/Excel/PowerPoint) There is no reason why people should pay lots of money per instance for an OS. As the number of devices increases, the $/device will approach zero. Apple realizes that, but, M$ is not yet willing to accept reality.

Nobody needs Microsoft Office. Pages, Numbers, Keynote are the killer apps that are driving productivity for millions of enterprise users on desktop and mobile platforms.

. . . unless you want to be compatible with the world standard.

iWork is pretty good. The iWork apps are perfect for those who would term them "killer apps". Sometimes you need something that is cross-platform compatible. Other times you might need obscure features that iWork just does not have.

iWork has some things that get in the way of work. Rubber-banding and that goofy tendency for a selected cell to want to be moved rather than expanded into a larger selection come to mind.

iWork will be great on an iPhone or iPad which is where Mac is headed but I'll take Office all day. It's the real thing.

MS is going to continue its slide into irrelevancy until it can separate the notion that their products are subservient to selling Windows licenses.

I think these Computer Giants should stop making guys with Steve as their first name the CEO. Maybe someone named Mark or Tom, or even someone with an awesome Irish name or something. Anything but Steve/Stephen.

Because then it really is going to get to the point where Microsoft and Apple fan people will wear shirts with " My Steve is better than your Steve," and then it's just going to get even uglier.

They should find someone named Tim.

Can someone explain why Microsoft would have Ballmer announce strategy and organization ("One Microsoft) and then ask him to leave? What if the new CEO wants to split up the company? Or will Gates and the board only hire someone who is on board with the One Microsoft strategy?

Selling off XBOX Division?

Has XBOX not brought in the amount of cash they were hoping?

Xbox might be the most loved, but it's not even close to the most profitable. Office and Windows are the big cash cows at Microsoft.

My iPad was delivered today. As soon as I get home I'm putting Pages and Numbers on it. Done, all the office apps I need. Sorry MS (not really:p ) but no MS for my Macs. No MS for my iPad.

Elop Destroyed Nokia's value in a little over 6 months after taking over, I would seriously short M$ stock if he's tapped

That's a misconception. Nokia's value had already been destroyed by the former management in the years before. When Elop took over, Nokia was almost dead, and he did the only thing that could save the company: he killed all the projects and strategies that were doomed, i.e. almost everything in terms of software.

What would have been your plan to save Nokia? Go on with Symbian and Meego?

The lack of knowledge about what Microsoft does is really telling.

Their three big products are Windows, Office and Server. Xbox and Bing are essentially loss leaders. One can argue either way about whether they should sell them or not, but neither Xbox nor Bing are core products.

The debate with Office on iOS is just whether they want to potentially sacrifice profits in Windows for profits in Office. This is especially tricky since they're getting into devices. It's a battle of platforms within the company as well as without.

I respectfully disagree.

Selling off Xbox wouldn't be a bad decision like some think here. You have to see past being a fan of the system.

It loses money for Microsoft. Then you have to remember that the whole reason Microsoft entered the console market was to slow down a potential threat by Sony to their OS division. It wasn't for profitability. Now that Sony is floundering financially and no longer threat, there is no reason for them to remain in the video game console market. Google and Apple are far bigger threats to their core business right now and they should focus on those.

Office is supposed to be this huge desktop application suite that comes with 95% of the features which only 5% of the people need 5% of the time. No one wants a touch-only dumbed-down basic-needs version of MS Office for iOS. There just is no viable market for Microsoft.

Are you high on something? The Xbox division loses money and they would be even further in the red if they had not folded in the consistently profitable Mac Business Unit which make Office for Mac to prop up their numbers.
