It's simple: The MacBook Pro is one of the most expensive notebooks out there and people expect it to be top-of-the-line because of that. Now Intel came out with a new CPU generation. We're not talking about a simple speed bump of a few mhz but a completely new CPU architecture (like G3 to G4 or Pentium2 to Pentium3) since the old core duo was just two of the old Pentium-M cores.

It's obvious that people are not willing to pay over 2000$ for a high-end-product that contains technology which is officially described as "obsolete by now" by Intel.

Anyway: Wait and see. There are many possible release dates this month.

I don't give a damned for slim chasis.. who cares about "Oh look! We made it another 1mm thinner! Too bad there is less space in it for so and so feature!", give me my easy access HD panel and Merom and I will be happy 😎

I think another way to think about it is this. If merom is only 10-15% better than Yonah, but you go from a Yonah 2.16 to a 2.33 shouldn't that make it even better?

After seeing the new MB everyone knows deep down inside that the current MBP design is just a rush job to get Apple some cash while the real innovations are down the tube 🙂

I wouldn't get the MBP personally until I at least see the magnetic latch and easy access HD panel on the MBPs as well.

MBP rev A. was/is rather a Powerbook replacement than a new design. You are right, 9 months without any substantial update is a bit too long. They should release rev B. soon and I hope that it will be something more than just a new processor - finally a new design.

My message parallelism, computer security, and computer graphics classes would all disagree with you...a lot.

were you expected to do all your school work the require horsepower from computer, on your OWN computer?

i'm doing engineering, and in my school, there's plenty computer labs for you (or me) to do complicated and long calculations, which leaves personal computer, for personal uses... in fact, unless you (or I) want to spend the money to get some of the applications (e.g. matlab, mathmetica, etc), I have to use the school's computer lab

Thats why its the pro model and some of us who are waiting for the C2D macbook pro can really benefit from any performance upgrade and for those who won't benefit go buy a macbook for your everyday use

for some of my everyday use, gaming for example, macbook is quite not enough, but i sure don't think merom's gonna make THAT much of a difference for the games i play now.. provided, i'm not heavy gamer

again, from many reports i read, apparently merom w/o santa rosa only give less than 10% performance bump in relative heavy uses (also, provided, some other reports report differently), i dont know how much of a benefit is merom at this point... dont get me wrong, i think idealy and eventually, merom is a much better chip than yonah, just perhaps not at this point...

Upgrading to merom is a benefit if your last computer is almost four years old, which is the case for me. I am looking forward to the immense benefits from such a bump. I doubt most people on here who want merom are coming from yonah systems, unless they're rich, or their income is mostly disposable and they can occassionally do without such necessities as food and shelter.

oh that i can't possibly agree with you more. all i'm saying is there isn't that much difference between yonah and merom at this point, at least until santa rosa... aka, if merom is the only thing you are waiting for, you might as well buy yonah now and get the ipod deal and stuff, because the CPU alone is not much of a speed bump

You wouldn't WANT to run 64 bits on these Meroms. 64 bit code occupies twice as much memory as 32 bit code due to additional space allocated for addressing (and don't forget the additional number of registers too) so with 64 bit code you will NEED more than 4GB of ram.

If anything the iMacs have shown us that APPLE is just shipping out half arsed 32 bit computers with a 64 bit CPU in them, the CPU is ready but APPLE is using the old chipset that isn't. How's that for utility?!

The current 15" MPB is in some way a downgrade from the 15" PB it replaced.
Add those features back and I will buy one...

Add another to the wishlist: upgradable graphics card a la the 24" iMac. A true pro machine should give you graphics options.

For all the frustrated and disappointed, I have a sneaky feeling Apple won't do MBP updates until the week after next at the earliest. Next week will be dedicated to movies and other related consumer initiatives. And the week after that, if we're lucky, MBP upgrades. Sorry. 😱

Good News!

Today my iBook (from 2001) finally gave up the ghost. Took it in to the Mac Store, and the hard drive is kaputt.

So that means Apple has to release an upgrade for the MBP this weekend, or at least Monday, right?? Right?? 😱

Yes, we do have labs. For some things they are appropriate, however, our best machine is a 4 processor SMP solaris server. The throughput is a little low when you have to share that with the rest of the engineering school. Oftentimes doing work on your own computer ends up being faster because of the process scheduling on these servers (they are still geared for responsiveness over throughput, AFAIK).

As for graphics, our labs are all designed for number crunching and thus most of the computers are thin clients that just use the server for their work, and none of that adds up to responsiveness for OpenGL programming (for example).

Yes, my school's engineering school is poor, as is, more specifically, the Comp Sci dept. The school of communication, on the other hand, is building their third building because someone dumped a few more million into their lap 😡

Long story short, your own computer ends up being the best tool for jobs where you want the answer now as opposed to, "I'll leave this job in the background and come back later"

Like my Pentium III... so excited for my first Mac and to no longer be on Pentium processors... oh man...

As poppe has stated a few times, I'm getting on the Sept. 26th (Photokina) bandwaggon for the last reasonable date to release C2D MBP's. If it goes beyond that, I'm looking at buying a yonah MBP.
