local shop is the official apple repair centre and have posters up about replacing batteries. went in there as my battery is playing up like everyones.

not surprised when the guy said they had to order a battery as I live on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic.

however the guy insisted that they would only process it if I left my phone with him and then he would then order the battery.

I said I need my phone, why can't he order the battery and when its ready bring my phone in? told me its policy.

is this normal? is it worth me complaining to apple?

Doesn't sound normal to me.

For instance, i needed a new battery for my 2012 MacBook Pro (I know laptop vs. phone), and since the parts would take two weeks, I left with my laptop. They called me and now its getting repaired.

I'd double check if they are in fact an authorized apple center. Just because you see the words "official" doesn't make it so

It’s definitely the only Apple repair centre. They were very good when my iMac 2011 was repaired free on apples sayso before.

Might it be better if I contact Apple and see if they can authorise it then the repair centre surely have to follow it.

Maybe he is worried he will order it and then you don’t come back and he is stuck with it and the bill. I would say this is not normal but since you are on an island he may just be protecting himself. He also may have had bad previous experiences. Just my guess.

Asking for an advance payment or suggesting an advance payment makes sense. What does he plan to do with the phone with him for a few days/weeks !

I have gone onto the apple website and requested a call so they will call me this morning

its not a small shop though its part of a large Portuguese chain.

It's not an "Apple" store, it's a privately owned repair center. They are allowed to make their own rules and do so. Not the first post on this issue.

apple rang me but (unusually for apple) just basically told me nothing. suggested I keep ringing the shop to see when they have batteries in stock, I tried to explain that I got the impression the shop will only order them in for the repairs they need, he says this isn't true, he was actually Portuguese so should know that the whole population of the island is 300k so I can't imagine they have such huge demand for iPhone 6 replacement batteries that they order in tons of stock, and certainly my conversation in the shop the guy didn't say 'we might get some in next week' and surely when I said I didn't want to leave my phone he would have suggested ringing them in a week or so rather than saying I had to leave my phone full stop.

so the daft thing is it'll make more sense for me to go to a 3rd party shop and pay them for a 3rd party battery which isn't the best thing for my iPhone but what else am I supposed to do
