I personally would like some different kinds of challenges. I don't know what's possible, but I've given up on the mile/5k/10k challenges (the sensor simply won't accurately record my times), so all I'm doing now is the distance challenge. And frankly, the distance challenge isn't really all that much fun when it's only a couple of people at higher milage totals (and nobody can agree on the rules! :p).

So for the sake of keeping this interesting, let's see what other good challenges we can come up with! :)

i agree that i'd like to see something new. but to my understanding, the really only things we can do are variations of what we've already got.

the group challenge is a great idea, but what group would we compete against? me and you against everyone else here? or macrumors vs windows? it would be hard to find a group to go against

I can look into it - a group challenge would be to set up a milestone and either have all group members make it or make it collectively. I will also look into finding another group to compete with, but from what I have seen it is tracked outside of Nike - in other words they woun't keep track of cross group performances, we would have to.

I am just trying to think of some things for 2008 so I can set it up early.

I will keep all posted.

AS - If you want to set up an under 50/mth I can send you the nike ID's that would fall into that range based on past performance.

We just need to get MR in shape to have more competition in the distance challenges. I will try and be a closer third in October :)

A little off topic, but is anyone else running the NY Marathon in November?

thanks ziwi. if we do a group challenge, i think it should be a goal for the group as a whole.

the reason i brought up challenging another group is b/c they advertised on the nike+ site about "brooklyn vs whoever" and "northside vs southside". i guess we can't do something like that?

Great, thanks a lot for all your hard work ziwi. :)

Nope, but I am training for marathons. The plan is Disney World in January and Boston in April... but we'll see. :)

I am way too slow for Boston... maybe I'll have a shot to qualify by 2010 if I keep training hard :)

He must have ran a marathon before... or he would have no chance of getting into Boston :)

have you ever ran a marathon before?

Nope!

I can qualify any time before race day. I plan to run a marathon in January to qualify.

I know that conventional wisdom says that running 2 marathons 3 months apart is not smart, but I think I'll be fine. The qualification time for an under-40 male is 3:10, which is about 7:15/mile. My usual, "relaxed" pace is 7:06/mile (or so says my nike+. But seriously, it is around 7). So the qualifier will really not be an all-out effort, which is why I think I'll be good to go again for Boston.

yeah it was. I was pushed by another guy to my limit. I ended up doing 30 miles the last day to win (took me 7 hours). I'm sure its still on the forums. I think it was July

It was june.
I couldn't run on the last day, one more Km from me and that 30 miles would have been in vain:p
Without the injury I could have cracked 400Km.
That distance is a once a year thing for me.
I'm concentrating on getting faster, so shorter distances these days.

Tricky trying to come up with new challenges.
Hopefully the nike site gets smarter, like a challenge that takes into account distance, speed, weight and age. Probably take a few years before nike gets that clever.

i was gonna ask your goal, but i guess under 3:10. yeah, 7:15 sounds easy, but for 26.2 miles.......i'm pretty sure it's not as easy as you think. (not saying you can't do it). if i were to ever run a marathon (as of right now i'm not planning on it), my goal would be under 3. then i could say i beat Lance Armstrong. ;)

ok, it was june (sorry i couldn't remember - tough month)
well, i think i finished around 11:15 or so, so i still had 45 min to put in a little more if i had to (thank goodness i didn't). but since you were in another time zone, luckily i didn't run into that problem.

yeah i'm going to shorter runs also. i'm training for 800 meters, when usually at this time of year i'm training for 8000 meters. (thank goodness those days are over)

Under 3:10 for the first one, yeah. But I don't think that will be very hard. By the time I do that I will have been doing long runs of 22-24 miles at a faster pace than that. There's no magic to 26.2 miles; it's just a matter of builiding up to it.

Boston is the one where I'll be trying to run a good time.

yeah i know. it's mainly just putting in the miles for it. even those long runs will be pretty tough though.

what's your goal for boston?

i had a college professor who said his best was 2:37 in the chicago marathon (i think). i thought that was pretty good. my college coach ran 2:32 i believe

Hi everyone...

New to this challenge thing. So how exactly does it work? Seems like I don't really need the Nike/iPod (I have neither). I'm training for a half-marathon in December, so I'd like to run about 60 miles in October. Do I just keep track of miles run and report back at the end of the month?

hi. well, we don't actually track the miles ourselves (since people could lie), so nike tracks everything on their nikeplus website.

so basically, you run with your ipod and nike+ kit. then you plug up your ipod to your computer and it uploads the data to your account at nikeplus.com. if you're already signed up with the challenges, then it automatically adds it there also, and you can check your status and such.

hope this helps. but to answer your question, yes you need a nano and nike+ kit

the long runs will get tougher, but again, as long as I build up to it in a sane way (say, add a mile/week to the long run), I should be ok. Not saying it won't be hard, but that's kinda the point, isn't it? ;)

Don't have a goal for Boston yet. Gonna have to run the first one and see just how tough this marathoning stuff really is!

I've had the (mis)fortune to know a lot of good marathoners (fortunate because they're great resources, unfortunate because nobody is going to be impressed by my marathoning debut!). My high school coach ran high 2:20s. My college coach was around 20th at Boston, years ago. A guy I worked with over the summer was top 50 at Boston in the recent past. And a teammate of mine from college has qualified for the Olympic trials - 2:21!!! That's about 5:23/mile or so...

QCassidy352, those times are disgusting.. wow..

Just do the best you can, and then go out and better it the next time.

those times are pretty crazy. i know a few people that are close to the trials, but not in the marathon.

good luck to you, and let us know how it turns out

QCassidy wins the September Challenge with 206.32 Miles!

Congratulations!

I am formulating new challenges - The timed events may need to go...to make room forthe more group / team oriented ones. Perhaps I will start them in November.

That is strange...It may be a Nike thing - I only attempted it once...
Probably just a hiccup somewhere... it's happened before... though it's only duplicated some invites earlier, never tripled them...

Accepted "the first one" without any problems, but I was a bit confused when I went to accept "the second" challenge... ;)
