...things I didn't spot in the movie:

1. A mention of Mars or martians.
I noticed that too. I suppose now that we know there isn't life on Mars (or at least, advanced life forms) having the attack come from Mars would stretch credibility.

Finally got round to seeing this last night on DVD.

Positives: Excellent performances, exquisitely stunning photography and post-processing or colour timing or whatever they do these days, editing top-notch, fantastic sense of despair, superb effects.

Negatives: After-thought voice-overs at beginning and end to explain the plot to dimwits. Spielberg and his constant heavy-handed nods to the fractured family and absent father figures — enough already! Overtly playing on 9/11. Basement scene too protracted (did we need to see the aliens come out of their machines at this point?)

Still, beats the hell out of AI.

Your referring to the scenes with everyone covered in white dust? At first I thought it was cool/eerie. But then after I thought about it a bit more, I began thinking it was a bit of a cheap way to add "heaviness" (for lack of a better word) to the situation. And I couldnt help but be a bit distracted by thinking of that day a bit while watching that part of the movie.

Not my taste. I just prefer James Cameron
