My strategy was to beg off yet another dinner and watch college football, which I hadn't done for 25 years. Saw a couple of good games - USC-UCLA tied up in the last 11 seconds and then double overtime. Wow.

USC-UCLA?

Are you posting from two weeks in the future?

iGary, I think it is great you are going. After all, this woman loved your dad. and aside from the memories she has with him, she has you. That has to be pretty special, whether she says it or not. Put your laptop aside, and do what you are going there to do...Build relationships. It may be hard, because you don't feel as close to everyone, but sometime we all need to get outside our comfort zones and find those gems in life that we would not have if we didn't. This could be a defining moment for you all as a family...but you may have to be the one to make it happen.

Sometimes we don't see ourselves as others do, we only see ourselves through our own insecurities, which others don't typically see....so...just be honest and enjoy the time...tell them what they mean to you as a family...and see how you can have an impact on their lives...and how they can have an impact on yours.

Sorry for all the "text" but something I feel strongly against is families sitting around a table having nothing in common or nothing to talk about. Everyone has something in common, no one wants to start the "meaningful" conversations that lead to those things.

iGary, we'll be praying for you this weekend, and hopefully you will have a great time.

Good luck ;)

Well then I'll either plow through an assload of wine or be really good at Applescript by the end of the week. Haven't decided on a backup plan.

I hate the holidays.
I think the two go hand in hand.

Well.

No wireless. Dial up on the computer at the rental.

Blizzard conditions driving back to Baltimore for my nephew's football game at Raven's Stadium.

Honestly, I didn't miss my computer at all. I had a nice time with my "new" family, watching packs of deer run by in the snow, drinking wine by the fire and retreating from the madness to my room every now and then.

And yes, I took about 500 frames of pictures. Kids are fun to catch in their funniest moments. :)

Sounds lovely. Glad it all turned out much better than you had feared.

Maybe that was the right set of expectations after all. That way you were pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed.

Glad you had a good one, iGary. What you describe is pretty much what I miss and would look forward to having. Snow, going to a football game, surrounded by the welcomed frenzy of kids and fun, with a place to retreat from it when you needed it.

I love family Christmas get togethers, not all of us can make it but they're generally good. Cold cuts, vegies, salads etc with pudding at my nan's followed by days of leftover ham sandwiches and chocolates. Then freshly caught seafood and more cold meats etc with Dad's side of the family, normally at some beach side park a few weeks later in January.

Both of them punctuated by cricket on the TV/radio/internet.

Gold. Love a long hot Christmas - so long as it's not a long, hot, smoky, ashy, embery, scary Christmas like it was a few years back.

Glad to see all went well, so nice to hear white Christmas descriptions from our northern hemisphere friends. I've done hot and cold and I like them both I think. Had more scorching hot Chrissies though.

The snow was bizarre - lake effect from the Great Lakes.

We left at 6:00 a.m. in the dark and it was blinding snow - got all of us up to the hill to Uncle Andy's car, got it brushed off and then to the game 3.5 hour's drive.

2 hours game, 3.5 hours drive back. About an hour away from Deep Creek Lake, at the top of a mountain pass, it went to white out again. Slow drive back. Nice though.

Felt strange and kinda sad without dad there this year, and I'm kinda lonely now with everyone gone, but it was one of the better Thanksgivings in a good while.

:)

Very glad to hear that you did have a good time. Are you back there for Christmas?

Thanks.

No, we rent a different place every year just for Thanksgiving. Since all 30 of us are spread all over the place, it is the one time a year we get together in one place.

I have a step sieter who is about 45 minutes away and we'll head to her house for Christmas Eve and Christmas. :)

Glad it went better than expected. Trust you'll be going again next year with prints to dole out?

So, does your nephew play for Gilman or The Hall?
