I bought the same monitor yesterday ! :) Techbargains.com is a wonderful site , they post some really great deals there.

I ended up adding diablo 2 to my order for 20 dollars, to boost it over the 750 , which seemed like a fair price. I was going to add the cd-rs, but they seemed over priced for what they are...but either way :).

I can't wait to get it...mmmm...monitory goodness.

cheers,
justin

IT IS NOT THE SAME FRIGGIN SCREEN. THE PANELS ARE DIFFERENT. Same size, yes. Same resolution, yes. Same panel, no. I have both the Dell and Apple display and find the Apple display to be the better of the two. IMHO.
The Dell is a good display I just find the Apple display to be more useful and pleasing to the eye. The Dell seems to be cranked up a bit to much.

Two cents.
In some instances, Dell gets better panels than Apple, while sometimes they get the same.

Also, about being "cranked up way too much", ALL lcd displays are cranked up too much. Its just that Dell's default calibration settings are more "off" than Apples displays (in most cases). You'd have to calibrate the colour of both the Dell and Apple displays anyway, and in many cases, Dell provides better brightness and contrast than ACDs if they're both calibrated well.

^^Exactly. And even if they did use the same parts, the only people who buy the B&O are the elitest types who can't buy something thats "common." Its just like people who buy Macs only because less people use them.

But hell, if that makes some people in this world happy.....

Most of the uniformity problems were in the first year of monitors, the newer ones have no such problem. I compared my monitor to my friends Cinema Display, side by side mine looked a little bit better, not a huge difference, but noticable.

When you take something that is massed produced, such as Dell's anything, you're going to get your highs and lows on a consistent basis. Their quality control is not as stringent as Apple's, and the Anendtech article mentions this as well. A small sampling reveals this, as it is not just based off of one or two monitors. Sounds like you got lucky.

Yes, without Apple Care, (and you should have this anyway), the Dell warranty is 3 years to Apple's 1, but who wants to go around exchanging monitors all the time because you bought the coupon based, mass produced, blue light special, deal of the day?

Same goes with the PC's versus Macs. Why do we pay a premium for Macs? A PC will get you where you want to go as well, but a PC is not built as well, doesn't look as good, and is plagued with other consistent problems down the road.

An as edesignuk stated, I refuse to get myself into another one of these conversations... :D

I use apple for more then 15 years. Fun and professional. I love my tools. they always work, never let me down. I hope they keep up the good work and don't lower their standards. I rather buy something good and expensive then buying more from a lower product over the same time due to failures. Anyway. You all know what I want to say... Everyone should be happy with what he can effort.

Good deal! I just laid down $400 on a flash unit which was super necessary (need it for today where I'll earn it all back in less than a day). However, I think MacRumors is big enough where they should offer a text message to users who subscribe when deals like this break! I for one would even be willing to pay a few bucks a month for it.

You can subscribe to deal email alerts at dealmac.com

This is a GREAT deal. Even with the California taxes and environmental fees, it's $450 shipped.

I've grown to trust Anandtech's reviews. They are clear that the Apple is a better product due to it's design and cable management. But for the intended purpose of a display, I can't justify spending $300+ for those small luxuries.

Dude, I can't believe I'm getting a Dell.

edit: The first post on this topic is slightly inaccurate. $397 is the price BEFORE tax. Shipping is free, but you'll pay some taxes.

Its not a "blue light special". Dell consistently has these sales...so rarely does anyone EVER pay full price. For a Dell product, it would be highly naive and ignorant to even consider paying the normal price ($749). What is more ridiculous was that Apple's 20inchers used to be $999 (before the recent price drop). We're talking about supposed quality control costing (at a time) a near 100% premium.

I don't know about you, but a factor of two is stretching it.

I just ordered this monitor to finally replace my old CRT for the PC.

Great price IMO, can't wait to clear out some desk space from that monster 19 inch CRT I've got!

Stupid question, but can I use this monitor as a TV?

I know I can hook it up to my 12" powerbook and use as a deskotp monitor... but about using it as a TV... is that possible?

I am new here. Will this work on Mac Mini?

Thanks.

Yeah it will work fine. Apple uses the 20 inch display in their stores for the Mini. Also there are a lot of people who have paired this monitor with their Mini. Do a search and you will fine some people with first hand experience.

I just bought this...paid 403 w/ shipping and tax...what a great deal...cant wait till it gets here...dont care if its not as good as the apple...i buy one l8er...dont really have the money now, but how can one pass up this amazing deal...thanks for the coupons...

Yes, but not easily. You'd need either a standalone tuner of some sort or a TV tuner card for your computer (and in all honesty, a PC in order to get a quality tuner). With your PowerBook, the answer is pretty much no. But Dell does sell some cheap LCD TVs, too, if you want it for that purpose.

What a great deal! I just did placed my order!

Ironically, I was planning on purchasing two things this weekend:

1. A spindle of CDR's
2. A flat panel monitor for my new mini, and my wife's PB

I just got both shipped, + tax for $430!

In California no less!

Ok. My friends iBook needed its logic board replaced. His battery failed to hold a charge at all only after a year and a half. My Powerbook needed to have almost all of its internal components replaced after some hardware got "corrupted" Applecare said. You're paying for a nicely designed product when you pay the premium from apple. Not necessarily build quality. Much like buying European luxury vehicles. A friend's $90k Mercedes SL needs constant maintenance compared to my Civic. BTW. I ordered the Dell as well.

you cannot compare computers and cars like that... ok first off a ferrari needs more maintenance then anything is it because of poor craftsman ship? poor build quality? no its not. its because a ferrari is a highly TUNED machine, and like any other instrument that needs to be tuned, it falls out of tune. Being that the degree of tuning is much higher, it is that much easier for it to fall out of tune.

a $90,000 Mercedes needs constant maintenance, notice you didn't say repair, repair would imply there is somethign wrong with it. but maintenance is like running software update, and running the periodic scripts for your mac, not disk first aid, or tech tools.

the reason your civic doesn't need maintenance is because it isn't in tune so it cant go out of tune, also its built by a company that places emphasis on drivetrain durability. and not on performance.

thats why that analogy doesn't make any sense...

also there are plenty lemon honda's just as there are lemon mercedes

A bit OT.
So the Elgato TV-tuners aren't good? I was just about to buy one.
How about the Formac?
