I think the “there’s no Black” crowd are being a bit silly. We’ve had weird greys and near blacks before, and the new “Blue” looks close to iPhone 5 Slate. It will look cool Black in most scenarios:

Close? Sure. But it’s still not Black. Lol

Disappointed with the colour selection of the 17 Pro’s also. The 16 Pro’s two tone black with the camera module and the glass back is probably the best colour scheme I’ve seen on an iPhone. Now I am seriously considering the 17 Air. I’ll make my final decision when I go to the Apple Store shortly after launch.

I'm surprised people actually buy black. Makes it look like one solid monolithic block. It's also the color that usually goes on sale first.
In the past black when there was the forehead and chin on the front display black was always more ideal because it would be less distracting when viewing. Even now, with a full screen, the edges of light color bother me, which is why I always go black still.

The colours of the Pro's are terrible. I'm Dutch but that orange is ghastly, Blue nah, Silver I could have lived with but then they ruin it by the different colour back area.

Don't like any of them.

Yet, the Air especially has elegant choices.
Yet I'm Dutch and love that orange (see how nationality doesn't have anything to do with it)

Exactly. For me it's mostly about how well the bezel blends in with the screen both when on (I always use dark mode) and when off.

While I am disappointed that there isn't a true dark black I'm just going to get the dark blue one and move on. As with so many things in my life when something isn't exactly as I wanted it will probably bug me for a few days, or even a few weeks, and then I will 100% stop noticing it and it will never concern me again. And as you say, with the forehead and chin now a thing of the past and the bezels much thinner my blending-in thing is much less of a consideration anyway. I still can't see myself ever going with a very light colour though.

I think they want people to buy the black Air.
I don't think that's a viable alternative for people that have been getting the Pro's for the past few years. Only one camera, smaller battery. And it might get pretty hot as well with everything crammed in there and the titanium edge.

maybe I just missed people saying “there’s no black” during the years we had Midnight and Grey schemes that were arguably a further percentage away from Black on a spectrum scale than this year’s darkest color

Based on what I’ve seen, the Deep Blue model—the darkest color in the lineup—gets chipped quite easily, even from day one. I can only imagine how much worse it would look over time if they made the Pros in black. That’s why I’m going with the Silver this year :D

Just shame that the silver had a stupid white back. If they made that glass darker it would have fitted in, the lighter version is horrendous in my opinion.

Many people would argue that black makes a device look clean, professional, and not like a toy. I personally find this to be a really dumb argument, but some men even feel that lighter colours like white or more vibrant colours are less masculine.

Damn. It's like iphone 5 anodized issues all over again. Yeah that chipping gonna be annoying.

I was ready to move from mini to 17 pro but where the heck is the black color? I never choose any other color than black for my phones. I guess I am stuck with 13 mini for now then :(
Same for me, always black. We will go silver PM this year. I case it anyway. iPhones are too slippery without a case for grip.

Have you considered those Nomad Magnetic Back Case? I wonder if they improve the grip.
Just received my Apple clear case and it is NICE. Many of today’s cases make it hard to push the home and volume buttons and Apple did it right. Even the camera buttons is handled well. It is lite as a feather and very thin. It will show off my Silver 17 PM.
