OK, I've been using this thing properly for two days and apart from the very, very nice and bright 14" widescreen (minus the stupid glossy coating that means I have to have my window closed to see the screen without reflections) and popping the start bar to the top, bunging the 10.4 default background as my wallpaper, Windows is driving my absolutely nucking futs.

It took me half an hour to get a driver for my printer (three different downloads failed then it took ages to download. I can't find a decent (and free) DVD -> mp4 converter that doesn't require a thorough knowledge of the command line (This is a 1.8GHz Pentium M compared to my 1.2GHz G4 so I was hoping to do some serious encoding during the night), no Dashboard seriously sucks and I'm paranoid about downloading anything in case a: it's dodgy or b: it's not dodgy but somehow interferes with something Dad can normally do and will get him on my case.

Oh, and it takes ages, and ages to boot up - all those silly programs on the right hand side of the start bar just seem to take ages to load and then when you think you're done.......there's more of them.

I miss my 6 pin Firewire port. Good thing I have a 3G iPod so I got the 6 pin to 4 pin adapter free with it. Can't use my iPod mini though because Windows can't read HFS+ formatted iPods.

Windows Explorer isn't too bad a file browser and if I get the chance I'm going to log onto a network and remind myself just how good networking on Windows is. When it works I love being able to browse networked computers as though they were folders on my computer rather than that stupidly irrtating and convoluted method of hunting down individual folders and mounting them on my desktop. It really is the only thing I miss.

Damn I miss my iBook though, I hope it's fixed soon and fixed good.

Oh the joys of using Windblows XPee...

I feel your pain Chundles.

Oh man it's driving me crazy.

The screen on the other hand is a pearler. 14" widescreen, 1280x768 and bright as bright. Give it a non-reflective coating and it would be perfect. Actually, crank it up to 1280x800 to make up for all the wasted space in the Windows GUI.

Better speakers than the iBook too but the audio out is on the front so I have cables going into all four sides of this thing. It's helping me develop a wish-list for the new MacBook when it comes out.

13.3" 1280x800 bright widescreen.
Better speakers, 3 USB ports, 1 Firewire port, accessible HDD bay, DVI-out, keep the modem please!!!! we're not all on broadband yet, audio in and out, etc etc.

I'd better get my iBook back by the weekend or I'm going to spitting chips!

A common side effect of prolonged (e.g., more than one hour) exposure to Windows. ;) :)

Sounds good, my credit card is ready. :)

Uh oh, no need for desperate measures... ;) :)

Update...

The HDD is farked. He reckons it took a nasty knock somewhere and the heads did their job of smashing into the platters. No data recovery possible.

The HDD is out and has been replaced by a new 40GB one to replace the old 30GB so I got some more room out of it. Off home on the weekend to give Dad this thing back and get my iBook v1.1 back. If I could swap the screens I would but the rest can garn get farked. Dad says he's got it back and it's all working just fine. Ahhhh.....

Firstly; thank you for posting this. I imagined what it would be like to lose my entire computer (barring the sparse collection of backup CD's floating around). I'm going to do a whole backup when I get back from evening lectures.

I lost a lot of files in the past. Phone numbers and contact info from mates of yesteryear, coursework, game projects etc. Not good. I've always had this blind faith for Apple's hardware quality. whilst It's been good since January last year I can't help but worry that someday this faith is going to kick me in the teeth.

But i feel for you. I hope somehow everything works out for your little iBook.
